4.0 out of 5 stars The demon is in the details, January 15, 2011
This review is from: Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics, 14-Volume Set, Second Edition: V1-14 (Hardcover)
As the story goes with grand projects that make aspirations for comprehensiveness, the demon lies in the details. While offering an awe-inspiring breadth of information, with some entries really examining the matter to great depth, in my casual observation the informative value of this encyclopedia is slightly compromised by the failure to include entries on such influential linguists as George Lakoff (Metaphors We Live By; Women, Fire and Dangerous Things etc.) or James Pustejovsky (Generative Lexicon), to name a few. It doesn't make much sense especially if their work is so often cited in other entries. And though it would still make a solid acquisition for every major library or a linguistic department, I hope the 3rd. edition would make up for these shortcomings.
