Book Description

June 23, 1992 0080347223 978-0080347226 1
Magnetic and superconducting materials pervade every avenue of the technological world from microelectronics and mass-data storage to medicine and heavy engineering. This Concise Encyclopedia draws together for the first time in a single volume the remarkable advances seen in recent years in the discovery of new materials and improvements of existing materials, in the elucidation of a new and deeper understanding of their phenomenology and in the expansion and diversification of their application in technology. Magnetic and superconducting materials have much in common; they have both experienced, over the last decade, a revolution that has revitalised and galvanised their respective fields. In each case the impetus has come from the discovery of new materials; this, in turn, has stimulated a re-evaluation of a wide range of basic mechanisms and phenomena. The encyclopedia is based on newly commissioned articles and articles revised from the acclaimed Encyclopedia of Materials and Engineering. Details of all important materials systems and their properties are included and key areas such as thin films are covered. The volume contains 110 articles, alphabetically organised and written by over 120 acknowledged experts within the field of magnetic and superconducting materials. Each article discusses in turn one aspect of the subject and includes, where appropriate, photographs, line drawings and tables to aid the understanding of the topic under discussion. Cross-references guide readers to articles covering subjects of related interest and the bibliography at the end of each article indicates the most important recent literature.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The volume will be of particular value to materials scientists and those intersted in the properties and applications of magnetic and superconducting materials. A highly recommended reference book.
High Tech Ceramics News
The book is remarkably easy to use and information is found very quickly... There are few enough single volume reference works which treat fundamentals and applications, either for superconductivity or magnetism, on an equal footing. This book fills the gap admirably and will probably be found valuable by a large range of scientists
Advanced Materials
C.N.R. RAO
The encyclopedia is of considerable value to students, teachers and practitioners since almost all aspects of magnetic and supercoonducting materials have been covered in...detail. The presentation are concise and more than adequate for the purpose intended. The technical coverage is sound as expected of contributions from experts in the subject... The encyclopedia is recommended to all science libraries and to libraries of materials science and physics departments.

This review is from: Concise Encyclopedia of Magnetic & Superconducting Materials (Advances in Materials Sciences and Engineering) (Hardcover)
This book provides an in-depth yet accesible insight into the nature of magnetic and superconducting materials. The format is that of an alphabetical list of topics relating to magnetism and superconductivity. Typically 5 or so pages long, these individual topics provide the time-pressured researcher with quickly digestible infobytes that get straight to the point. Unlike more intractable books on the subject, there is less need to plough through monotonous introductory chapters.
