Book Description

April 13, 2004
The Encyclopedia of Mass Murder is a remarkable, revelatory exploration of the world's worst cases of mass murder. This comprehensive guide has been recently revised and updated for its U.S. debut from two true-crime experts. From this chilling collection, a significantly consistent pattern emerges of the person who commits mass murder: almost always male, a loner lacking in social skills, unable to form stable relationships. Bearing a grudge against society in general or blaming certain individuals in particular, he seeks revenge in the most extreme way. Among the 200 notorious cases profiled are Timothy McVeigh, responsible for the deaths of 168 people in the Oklahoma City bombing, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, two heavily armed students who opened fire at Columbine High School, killing 13 students, and Brenda Spencer, a rare instance of a female mass murderer, who shot dead eleven junior high classmates "because," she said, "I don't like Mondays." Eight pages of black-and-white photographs are included.

1.0 out of 5 stars this book is terrible!!!, August 24, 2007
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Mass Murder: A Chillling Collection of Mass Murder Cases (Paperback)
This is the most badly researched book i've ever seen! For example, I was reading about the columbine massacre and it gave the wrong date of the massacre and loads of false information. I do not recommend this book to anyone. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't rely on this book being at all accurate!, October 6, 2007
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Mass Murder: A Chillling Collection of Mass Murder Cases (Paperback)
I am very familiar with the facts of one of the murder cases covered by this book, so I read that entry first to see whether this book could be relied on to set forth the facts accurately. It was severely inaccurate! Even the names of the victims were wrong! And space is wasted on tangential matters while more important matters are not mentioned at all. What a waste!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good and bad, February 5, 2012
This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Mass Murder: A Chillling Collection of Mass Murder Cases (Paperback)
This book has both good and bad aspects. In the good column, it extensively catalogs a worldwide collection of these cases. A very wide reaching timeline too. The cases they profile start in about the mid 1700's and continue to the mid 2000s and go across about every racial and economic group you can imagine.

An alarm was set off in my mind when I reached the few paragraphs covering the Columbine High school shootings.

While the authors do correctly attribute the motivation behind the shooting to bullying( which is true no matter what Dave Cullen says),the rest contains grievous errors .Seeing as the book was released in 2004 to include newer case and thats several years after the shooting, I see no excuse for such shoddy reporting on this incident.

It makes me wonder if any other errors were made.Seeing as how I'm not familiar with many of the killings written about, I cannot say.

This book is still worth the time to read if you have an interest in true crime.
