The Encyclopedia of Mexico presents a processual view of Mexican history, society and culture from ancient civilizations to the present day. The primary emphasis is on broad historiographic issues, although the encyclopedia includes many supplementary entries on people and specific events. The encyclopedia provides students, academics, librarians and the general reader with convenient access to basic bibliographic and factual data on specific events and broad processes in Mexican history. It promotes scholarly dialogue across disciplinary and national borders and provides a useful component for multi-disciplinary courses on Mexico. This two-volume encyclopedia contains some 600 entries and represents a collaborative effort that has involved more than 350 leading scholars from around the world. Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Here is a unique reference source that reflects the global community of which we are so much a part. More than 300 scholars from across seven countries have collaborated to provide a multidisciplinary encyclopedia. Historical in scope, the 500-plus entries are alphabetically arranged to provide the most direct access, taking into consideration the needs of the nonspecialist.

Besides historical events, personalities, and institutions, the encyclopedia provides surveys on the events and processes of the history, society, and culture of Mexico. The subjects covered tend to emphasize the humanities and social sciences, with the sciences not as well represented. Topical essays run the gamut, including articles on agriculture, art, economics, education, foreign relations, institutions, language, law, national identities, philosophy and social thought, popular culture, regions and regionalism, religion, and more. The biographical entries include revolutionary novelist Mariano Azuela, Mexico City mayor Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, actor Catinflas, and artist Frida Kahlo. Entries may run to as few as 300 words and, depending on the topic, expand to 1,000^-1,200 words. Longer thematic articles, such as banking and finance, are subdivided chronologically. A selective bibliography, emphasizing English sources, is part of each entry. There are a significant number of see also references provided at the end of each article.

In addition to the index, the editors have provided an alphabetical list of the entries in each volume. There is also a thematic outline of entries in which all the essays are grouped into four major sections: culture, economy, geography and demography, and politics. Within these major groups there are smaller divisions. The thematic outline provides the nonspecialist not familiar with Mexican culture and history an overview of how the articles relate to one another.

Libraries that have purchased the five-volume Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture [RBB Jl 96] may not need this more specialized reference source. For libraries where there is significant interest in Mexican history and culture, however, the Encyclopedia of Mexico would make a valuable addition to the reference section.

Review

Thoroughly indexed, well planned, and comprehensive in its scope, the Encyclopedia of Mexico is a very welcome addition to public and academic library reference collections, especially in the southwestern United States. -- Rettig on Reference
A unique reference source... A valuable addition to the reference section. -- Booklist/RBB
This fine encyclopedia has some of the most scholarly, in-depth, complete, and current coverage of historical and cultural topics on Mexico available in English. It is destined to become the reference of choice for questions in the humanities and social sciences. -- American Reference Books Annual
The Encyclopedia of Mexico is unique in its detailed coverage of Mexican history, society, and culture... This reference work would be a valuable addition to the reference collections of academic and large public libraries. -- Reference & User Services Quarterly
Encyclopedia of Mexico fills a long-standing need andis warmly recommended for college, university, and larger public libraries. -- Choice
This is the most thorough and authoritative description of Mexican history, society, and culture yet offered to us. It is a splendid achievement, unlikely to be bettered, and enthusiastically recommended to all libraries with Latin American interests. -- Reference Reviews
