5.0 out of 5 stars From the Medical Herbalism journal
Top notch practical information from one of the most experienced herbalists in North America. Bove has degrees in both the British and naturopathic schools of herbalism, is a midwife, and has a busy practice caring for women and children. The book is readable, practical and suitable training for self-care by the lay public.

3.0 out of 5 stars Extensive information, but not great for a beginner
I was looking for a book that would give me some basic information on natural remedies for my baby. This book has been OK, but if I was really to follow it I would have to invest in building an entire cupboard of herbs and extracts, something I'm really not ready for.

For example, the remedy for the common cold involves combining up to 8 herbs/extracts,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Info Taken with A Grain of Salt, September 29, 2005
This review is from: An Encyclopedia of Natural Healing for Children and Infants (Paperback)
This is a great book, but must be used with common "mommy" sense. Some of the things in the book will go against what your pediatrician will recommend, and thats fine, but you need to make a choice based on both sources of wonderful information to decide what is best for your child.

One thing that did really bother me is that there is a recipe for teething that involves honey-honey should NEVER be given to an infant under one year of age because it can be potentialy deadly. And since most babies begin teething between 6-9 months I was a bit upset that this risk was not mentioned.

The information on making infusions, oils and the like is great though. I would recommend the book to anyone who has common sense about herbs and has a desire to raise a child without the use of a lot of man made medicines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for alternatives to prescriptions, October 14, 2005
I am not one of those people that boycotts medical doctors, but I do like to have alternatives to the overabundance of prescription medications out there. This book is great because it gives you information about all sorts of ailments, and different ways to treat them using natural products, as well as ways to measure how much to give to your children.

For example, the remedy for the common cold involves combining up to 8 herbs/extracts, none of which I have or even have heard of. It is very detailed information, but too much for someone who is not ready to dive into the deep end of natural remedies.

4.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly delighted with this resource, December 3, 2010

When I first received this book I was disappointed b/c it wasn't what I thought it was for some reason. HOWEVER, I have come to really like this book. It is better than your average childhood health reference by topic. She explains well HOW to use the remedy and most layman simple reference books don't do such a great job with that. She shares quite a few recipes for remedies, so she doesn't just give you a list of what to give them but rather goes beyond that by telling you how to use and apply the remedy. This is organized very well and has become one of my first quick reference go to guides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Organized Holistic Approach to Children's Health, November 5, 2006

Mary Bove has done a masterful job in creating a comprehensive resource for both parents and practitioners. Before subjecting your children to dangerous long-term medications, this book should be considered "first-line therapy." Parents should challange their children's doctors and practitioners should think about the consequences of the overuse of dangerous drug therapy. This book is a great place to start. I expected to find ways of natural healing with common household ingredients, items. Instead, there were many natural healing recipes with very strange herbs & ingredients that I think are hard to find. It wasn't what I expected.
