This monograph from a prolific author who has been a police officer, teacher, U.S. Navy journalist, and U.S. Army Special Forces soldier covers the Navy Seals from their World War II predecessors (e.g., Alamo Scouts, Underwater demolition teams) to their present units and service in Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf War, and Bosnia. Coverage includes organization, personnel, equipment, weapons, terms, and training.

More than 300 alphabetical entries vary from a paragraph to several pages in length. There are numerous cross-references at the end of each entry. About 50 black-and-white photographs illustrate the volume and are appropriately placed throughout the text. Assisting readers is a select bibliography with approximately 100 citations to books, periodicals, and one Web site. An examination of the bibliography shows the citations to be current and representative of the substantial amount of literature available. Rounding out the reference is a detailed index. Within the index, boldface page numbers represent main entries, and italics denote illustrations.

This reference will be popular with military aficionados, scholars, and general readers. Although there are dozens of books regarding the Navy Seals, this is the only reference in an encyclopedia format. This volume should be considered for acquisition by high-school, public, and academic libraries. RBB

A glorified cut & paste job, replete with factual errors, clumsy paraphrasing and garbled information. In terms of the book's title, the central error is the continuation of the "first SEAL" myth first promulgated by this author and Roy Boehm. Boehm was not the first, nor did he originate SEAL teams. Readers seeking the documented facts should read the article "What A Tangled Web We Weave" by retired Navy Capt. David Del Giudice (1st CO, SEAL Team One) in the 2nd Quarter, 2002 BLAST, magazine of the UDT-SEAL Assn.
Otherwise, I would suggest that readers consult Sasser's bibliography and read the original works for required information.
