Book Description

October 29, 2009

The Encyclopedia of Northern Kentucky is the authoritative reference on the people, places, history, and rich heritage of the Northern Kentucky region. The encyclopedia defines an overlooked region of more than 450,000 residents and celebrates its contributions to agriculture, art, architecture, commerce, education, entertainment, literature, medicine, military, science, and sports. Often referred to as one of the points of the "Golden Triangle" because of its proximity to Lexington and Louisville, Northern Kentucky is made up of eleven counties along the Ohio River: Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Kenton, Mason, Owen, Pendleton, and Robertson. With more than 2,000 entries, 170 images, and 13 maps, this encyclopedia will help readers appreciate the region's unique history and culture, as well as the role of Northern Kentucky in the larger history of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the nation. • Describes the "Golden Triangle" of Kentucky, an economically prosperous area with high employment, investment, and job-creation rates • Contains entries on institutions of higher learning, including Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More College, and three community and technical colleges • Details the historic cities of Covington, Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, and Ludlow and their renaissance along the shore of the Ohio River • Illustrates the importance of the Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky International Airport as well as major corporations such as Ashland, Fidelity Investments, Omnicare, Toyota North America, and United States Playing Card

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Northern Kentucky can be defined as the 11 counties in the northernmost part of the state, and bordered by the Ohio River. This encyclopedia describes the people, places, historic buildings, and history of the area. The editors, who have written widely on the subject, have been helped in this effort by many contributors, a large group of sponsors, and a grant from the Thomas D. Clark Foundation. Entries cover individuals such as Simon Kenton, a contemporary of Daniel Boone; and Larry Staverman, the first person from the region to play in the NBA. Cities and towns, such as Ghent and Poplar Grove, and famous landmarks, such as Immanuel United Methodist Church in Covington and Pompilio's Restaurant in Newport, are included. The entry on airports describes the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, but it also lists local airstrips within the counties. The region's role in the Civil War is extensively detailed. Local information can often be the hardest to find. The production of such an exhaustive regional encyclopedia is something that other regions can aspire to. Useful for libraries of all sizes interested in Northern Kentucky or for general geographic libraries. --Jack O'Gorman

I bought this as a X-mas gift for my father who is a history buff in general. This was a perfect gift as he spent much of his youth growning-up in N. KY. An overall fabulous book - you won't be disappointed.

I very much enjoy reading this book. The entries are long enough to give a good description of the people and places that have shaped Northern Kentucky but short enough that I don't find myself skimming the entry just to get through. I grew up in Northern Kentucky and I am finding entries that answer questions I've always had about "what was here before this rebuilding" or "who was this named for". This book will keep me entertained for a very long time.
