Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

New books on printmaking techniques are fairly uncommon, yet suddenly at least two good ones are on the market (the other one is Julia Ayres's Printmaking Techniques , LJ 8/93). Plentifully illustrated and divided into numbered sequences in easy-to-understand paragraphs, Martin's encyclopedia is the better buy for concise, step-by step demonstrations. A beginning artist could take this all-color manual into the studio and follow the procedures visually or verbally. All methods are covered, from relief to lithography, but this isn't just a recipe book. Markmaking and printing processes are treated separately, though excellent cross references anticipate any questions that might arise. The only real drawback is that plate and offset lithography are emphasized over stone printing. Whereas this makes good long-term sense because of limited supplies of special limestone, most educational institutions still use it. Recommended for all craft collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE WORK ON PRINTMAKING, April 2, 1999

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Printmaking Techniques (Encyclopedia of Art) (Paperback)
AN EXCITING AND COLORFUL BOOK WITH SUPERB EXPLAINATIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE MANY TYPES OF PRINTMAKING TECHNIQUES. I FOUND IT MOST ENLIGHTINING AS A NOVICE TO THIS AREA OF ART. IT NOT ONLY TEACHES THE MANY FORMS OF PRINTMAKING, BUT IT IS AN EXCELLENT GUIDE TO THE ACCEPTANCE OF WORKS UNDER THE TITLE OF "PRINTS" WHEN FACED WITH A JURORED EXHIBITION. ONLY POSSIBLE WEAKNESS I FOUND WAS A LACK OF A GLOSSARY OF TERMS SUCH AS"CHINE COLLE",BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN ENTERING THE FIELD OF PRINTMAKING.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME Guide to Printmaking, September 23, 2011

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Printmaking Techniques (Encyclopedia of Art) (Paperback)
I LOVE this book! I'm a long time printmaker (over 20 years) and I have all the classics, I even have this in a hardbound. I like this softbound as I can turn the pages back, its lighter to carry around and I can have a less expensive copy in the classroom and to recommend to students. The full color pictures make this a fun book to simply look at. The abundance of step by step pictures make this a perfect book for a printmaking beginner and well deserves a place next to Ross & Romano The Complete Printmaker) in any printmaking library!
