Book Description

August 1, 2005
With everything from advice on tools to the most beautiful designer layouts ever, this covers-it-all encyclopedia will be a must-have for the hundreds and thousands of scrapbooking fans.

Every technique, every major designer, every scrapbook possibility, described in glossary style, complete with photos and tips--that's what this A-to-Z encyclopedia contains, and that's why no scrapbooker can do without it. Exciting page layouts throughout, with how-to instructions, offer inspiration, while dozens of projects come from the most creative minds in the field including Andrea Grossman (Mrs. Grossman's Paper Company); Rhonda Anderson (Creative Memories); Bridgette Server (Making Memories); and Dee Gruenig. Eye-opening studio set shots present decorations and accessories, while charts, graphs, and blocked sections supply necessary information. A reference lists all the companies shown in the volume, with internet addresses and 800 numbers. Dr. Susannah Tucker, a professor from Tulane University, has provided an introduction and a timeline of scrapbooking since its inception to 1987.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This guide to everything scrapbooking (for the uninitiated: decorating a photo album) will acquaint both novice and experienced creators with the astounding array of products and methods available to them, but those looking for step-by-step instruction will be disappointed, as no instructions for individual projects are provided. While the bulk of the book is an alphabetical guide, from ABC Scrapbooks to woven paper, perhaps the most intriguing section is on the history of scrapbooking, which describes the history of scrapbooking from Ancient Greece to today, with stops along the way for Queen Victoria's personal album and Mark Twain's contribution to the art. Profiles of women calligraphers, book binders, card makers and paper designers add depth, even if they're surprisingly similar. The book's focus on traditional family-oriented pages keeps it from being as all-encompassing as it could be, and the style of the pages may not be sophisticated enough for urban scrapbookers. From Booklist

And they keep coming--that is, books on the craft of preserving memories, rediscovered in the late 1980s after centuries of dormancy, which seems to continue its appeal. Twhis new book underscore why this billion-dollar-plus industry increases its revenues, year after year. The mass-with-class encyclopedia from Rothamel jumbles together not only knowledge and tips and tools necessary to preserve memories with paper but also some unusual and intriguing content, such as the history of scrapbooking, traced to philosopher John Locke's 1705 publication of New Method of Making Commonplace Books; or more than 12 new careers to investigate, including biographies of altered scrapbook artist, layout artist, and vellum paper designer. How-tos and 17 techniques are scattered throughout this alphabetical reference, enough to spend days in the accumulation of know-how. However, the layout itself begs for redesign, since color and complexity tend to overwhelm visually. Barbara Jacobs

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Scrapbooking Tools & Techniques (Hardcover)
Plenty of books have hit the market covering all aspects of scrapbooking, the new popular hobby of building a family memory book - but Susan Pickering Rothamel's Encyclopedia Of Scrapbooking Tools & Techniques is about the only reference you really need if you're an avid scrapbook maker. All tools and techniques are described here, from acid migration and its problems to handling bubbling and edging problems with decoupage, understanding how journaling works, and handling photos and paper. A 'must' for any actively involved in producing different scrapbooks.

Someday I want to get my photos out of the shoebox, off the computer and into a book I can enjoy in the comfort of my favorite chair! Not knowing anything about scrapbooking as soon as I saw this book I knew it was a must have! Someday getting here will have to wait a little longer tho. As I went through the book, ideas for cardmaking,(my main addiction) were almost overwhelming! The tips, techniques and ideas in this book can easily be used for making cards and other crafting projects! The information in and inspiration that comes from this book is priceless!
