Book Description

November 16, 2004 0786417943 978-0786417940
There are more than 30 different organisms that cause infection and disease when transmitted by venereal contact. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) represent 87 percent of all reported infections.

This encyclopedia offers entries on such topics as diseases, treatments, statistics, care centers and departments, risk factors, prevention issues, legal issues, associations and organizations, procedures, and relevant historical and political information. Entries on sexually transmitted diseases include history, causes and origins, risk factors, precautions, incidence, symptoms, special problems relating to gender, race, or poverty level, diagnosis, descriptions of diagnostic tests, defining illnesses and related disorders, treatment (drug regimens, therapies, side effects, and alternative medicine), and considerations in pregnancy.

The work concludes with a wide selection of resources including books, journals, support groups, Hotlines, organizations, and Internet sites, as well as resources for low cost prescription drug programs, social security disability, and health insurance. Clinical trials, laboratory tests, and HIV/AIDS resources are also listed.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

All sorts of maladies may be found in this encyclopedia. Included are those diseases that are covered under the umbrella we've come to identify as STDs--sexually transmitted diseases--but the reader may find some other conditions that are not usually thought of as being in the same company. Examples of these are hepatitis A through E and scabies. Each disease entry includes helpful subsections for etiology, epidemiology, symptoms, complications, diagnosis, treatment, risk factors, and, where appropriate, issues regarding pregnancy. Infections transmitted through means other than sexual contact are also described. In this category, Body piercing, Needle sharing, and pregnancy each have their own entries.

The horror resulting from the gross misuse of sexual power may be found in the entries Child sexual abuse and Sexual assault. Oddly missing, however, is an entry for Rape, a term that might have helped steer readers to either of the above as a see also reference, if not a full definition.

Names associated with discovery, diagnosis, and healing are found in abundance. Although most are contemporary, the scope includes centuries past. Immunologist Paul Ehrlich, AIDS researcher Robert Gallo, and nineteenth-century French physician Phillipe Ricord are examples. Also defined are programs such as the Health Disparities Initiative, Healthy Life Choices Project, and Healthy People 2010.

In addition to an index, this work includes lists of books, journals, reports, Web sites; hotlines, and organizations. The Encyclopedia would be of value in both public and high-school libraries in which a quick reference on STDs is sought. Scottie Wallace

4.0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, solid information, non-technical read, February 5, 2005
This review is from: Encyclopedia of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Hardcover)
This encyclopedia offers a whole lot more than just entries on the thirty plus different organisms that cause sexually transmitted diseases. The entries include not only information on the diseases but also treatment modalities, various statistics, risk factors, prevention, support organizations, and historical information. Some of the entries provide fascinating historical information and statistical relationships between the diseases and race, socio-economic level, and gender. The authors even go so far as to include competing theories about treatment, origins of the disease, etc. Even-handed and complete the Encyclopedia of Sexually Transmitted Disease is a solid survey of the current understanding of sexually transmitted diseases.
