Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA Seven chapters of the strange, the bizarre, the unusual. Some of the entries are well-known (Atlantis, Jack the Ripper, Robin Hood, levitation, King Tut's curse); some of the entries, like those describing mystics and superstitions, are not so well-known. Many have been included in other collections similar to this one but readers never seem to tire of the type of material that asks them to believe it or not.

(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE STRANGE is another of Daniel Cohen's books to explore the world of the supernatural and unexplained mysteries. This time around he has sought to put as many mysteries as possible into a handy sized paperback book while still allowing ample coverage of each for a book of this scope. Rather than being alphabetical, the book (more of a collection than an encyclopedia) is broken down into seven thematic sections: 1) Ancient Mysteries; 2) Unknown Places; 3) Strange People; 4) Weird Talents; 5) Natural Mysteries; 6) Mysteries of Magic; 7) Classic Mysteries. Each section contains from 7 to 15 entries covering subjects such as: Ancient High Tech; The Great Pyramid; Pope Joan; Firewalking; The Sargasso Sea; The Illuminati; and the Burmuda Triangle among many others. Daniel Cohen's style is concise yet informative while maintaining objectivity. He has always presented his books in an easy to read style that is enjoyable by kids and adults alike. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE STRANGE presents a fun easy way to learn some of the mysteries of the unexplained. Daniel Cohen has also written similar volumes on ghosts and monsters called respectively THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF GHOSTS and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MONSTERS.
