This is the second volume of The Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Like its predecessor, released in 1996, it deals with bands from the far side of fluffiness to the heavy edge of death/black metal, stretching out towards prog, blues and hardcore.

"Volume II" contains close to 1000 bands of which 660 are new entries and the rest are up-dates of bands from the first book. A chapter with names and discographies of the remaining 700 bands from the first edition is also featured. The information presented for each band includes hometown, members, biography, musical description and a discography including year, format, title, label and catalogue number. All of it topped off with nice photos and record covers.

Special exclusive bonus CD contained inside! The CD features rare or never before issued tracks.

1. EUROPE - Blame It On Me

2. DAMAGE DONE - Losing My Religion

feat Patrik Isaksson/John Levén

3. MOTHERLODE - Rabiatha

4. YNGWIE MALMSTEEN - Amadeus Quattro Valvole

5. NEON ROSE - Woman From My Tribe

6. LION'S SHARE - Judgement Day (Niva version)

7. MUSTASCH - Log

8. FREAK KITCHEN - Ugly Side Of Me

featuring The Dildo Samba From Hell (live)

9. THERION - Revelations (live)

10. AB/CD - Cracked And Wacko

11. DAN SWANÖ - Lucretia My Reflection (heavy version)

12. TALISMAN - Rainbow's End

I came across this when I was living in the UK and at the time I was getting into HammerFall, Dream Evil and Lost Horizon, all great Swedish metal bands. Having relocated from Australia, we're unfortunately insulated from the rest of the world. Anyway, it's written by the drummer of Europe and he provides fascinating insight into a country rich in the appreciation of heavy music.

It's carefully narrated, provides much detail into the particular playing style and hard rock/metal genre of each band captured. In all it makes for a great read and an excellent selection for those wishing to explore new bands.
