5.0 out of 5 stars This entry is excellent
This book is excellent. It gives you down-to-earth information on every aspect of sex. It is written clearly, cleanly, informatively, and in plain english - with no hype. It is not a textbook, but yet written to be informative. It covers every, and I mean every, aspect of sexual activity. It is illustrated. The illustrations are a little small, but they are there, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Generally good, but with some sloppy research
Love's book is handy as a reference or for just flipping through, but be careful about using it as an authoritative source. I found a handful of mistakes, including its listing of snuff films as real. This has been an urban legend/hoax for decades, and its inclusion here makes me wonder just how well-researched the rest of the book is. For example, that section came from...

The illustrations are a little small, but they are there, and they help. You cannot know everything in this book. I learned, and I am 60, before I got to page 60. Thank god we might have finally got over our national fear about sex and on to dispensing all the information about it. It is both wonderful, and yet a little scary, to think that all of this exists, but it is necessary to let us know that it does. An infomred population will at least know what it is up against, and how to adjust to it's good points and bad ones. This type of information was a long time coming, in this wonderful form. This is a great addition to any home library, for both research, as well as inquisitive needs and questions. Thank you Ms. Love.

This review is from: The Encyclopedia of Unusual Sex Practices (Hardcover)
Love's book is handy as a reference or for just flipping through, but be careful about using it as an authoritative source. I found a handful of mistakes, including its listing of snuff films as real. This has been an urban legend/hoax for decades, and its inclusion here makes me wonder just how well-researched the rest of the book is. For example, that section came from an article in Penthouse on Satanism, perhaps not the best source for such material.

(For a more accurate view of the snuff film hoax, you might pick up a copy of Nadine Strossen's book Defending Pornography, where she tries to dispel the rumor that won't die. Or Susie Bright's article in the San Diego Reader (18 November 1983). Or Kim Mohan's survey of horror films Nightmare Movies, which the original film was. Or the May/June 1999 issue of the magazine the Skeptical Inquirer.)

Other than those sorts of oversights, the book is fun to read, in part just to convince yourself that there are weirder people than yourself out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible things people really do!, May 31, 1996

You probably don't expect to find yourself compulsively reading a book called an encyclopedia of anything, but then you probably don't expect to be reading about men who coax angry bees to sting their penises in order to make the organ swell and become more sensitive. The 750+ listings here will propel you from amazement to amazement as they carry you from abduction as a sex act to zoophilia (sex with animals). You will be repelled and excited, entranced and titillated, shocked and sucked right into the world of sexual extremes and oddities. And, all the time, you'll be making mental notes of which entries you just have to tell this or that friend about. Maybe not a book everyone will be comfortable having on the coffee table, but one you'll want within ea

5.0 out of 5 stars Answered all questions and then some..., December 2, 2003
Love (appropriately named) and Mavrides did an excellent job compiling this handy little coffee table book. I bought this while on vacation and my husband and I were intensely aroused with some of the obscure methods of sexual pleasure that were noted in this book. If you are the least bit interested in things that are "different," then I would highly recommend this gem!

When I think "encylopedia" I think entire sets or series of books. This is more like a dictionary of sexual practices. There is an attempt to provide context, historical and contemporary, but not always as fully or as clearly as you might like. Why is it "unusual"? Because a wide range of sexual activities and interests are covered that may not be strange to you or in your society but which could be rare or taboo for others. There is a good index so you can find things fairly easily and it is fun to read. Overall you come away knowing that the weird thing you did last night, really isn't all that weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dictionary of Kinks for Nillas and Kinksters Alike!, March 17, 2002

Blonde Goddess (Albuquerque, New Mexico United States) - See all my reviews
I "stumbled" over the on-line version of this book and just had to have it. I am the FemDomme Founder and Creator of some great FemDomme on-line clubs and have a weekly fetish discussion topic. After coming up with a year's plus topics, I was wanting to "dig a little deeper" and get some more ideas. This is a fantastic book. If you are conservative, this book will make you feel even more "normal", but you will certainly be better informed. If you are an "alternative lifestyler", you'll feel like whatever you're into still isn't the absolutely gamut of kinky!! Even I went EEEUUUUWWW a couple of times and I've been a FemDomme for over 16 years!! It has obviously been researched extensively, is written in a technical vein with a kink-friendly slant, and emphasizes all of the safety issues. Perhaps a better title might have been "Dictionary", than "Encyclopedia", however it is well worth the money and much cheaper than buying access to it on-line for two months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted or didn't want to know about sex!!!, December 23, 1998

Wow. People do that? Yuck. Ummmmm. Wow. Cool.

With every term my emotions changed from arousal to repulsion. So many terms, so little time to try them all.

An excellent resource and a ton of fun to read.

Anything from "normal" to "weird" to "bizarre" to just downright "disgusting" can be found in this encyclopedic reference guide of sex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book., February 24, 2010

This book covers quite broadly sexual behaviour in humans but I can't help feeling there is probably more to be said. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to broaden their understanding of sexuality. Be warned though, some content is disturbing.

This book should be called a listing of unusual sex practices. Its not a "how to" book for those who want to broaden their bedroom ativities.

Having said that, the book does detail the unusual sex practises from around the world. It's an interesting book.
There are illustrations but very few.Overall:average.
If you're curious this book will be of interest.
