This is a great book for beginners.,

The book gives step by step directions with pictures. It presents techniques for painting beaches, hills, waterfalls, fields, clouds, mist, pathways, etc. Although there is a section on color in the book, it is not consistently discussed in the step by step instructions for the different techniques. The use of ceramic stucco, wax resists, salt crystals, and sponges are introduced. As a beginner in watercolor, this book is one of my favorites.

Good for the beginner, less useful for the experienced,

I have this book but don't find that it is really an encyclopedia (where you'd go to look up a technique, for example.) The salt, sponge, lifting techniques are nicely documented, so this book would be good for a beginner who doesn't have these tricks up his or her sleeve yet. The section on skies is useful as well. In summary, if you are a beginning landscape watercolorist, you might really like this book. If you are a past master, pass this one by.

I love this instructional book for just that reason. It shows me just how to accomplish the varied techniques used to create my landscape painting. I enjoy the vibrancy with which Ms. Soan paints. This book would be a good choice for the beginning watercolor artist.

I was disappointed in this book. There seemed to be a lot of emphasis on various "tricks" like masking fluid and salt crystals. There didn't seem to be many new or fresh ideas to inspire me.

I had so many times checked this book out from my library that I decided I needed this book at HOME. The author has done a great job in leading me from one technique to the next teaching me how to create different landscapes; trees, mountains, water, mist, sun and more. I was so impressed with the author's work that I checked to see if she had written other art instruction books. Guess what! She has and I found her under Hazel Soan and Hazel Harrison. Her books rate 5 stars in my book.
