This second entry in the 10-volume series (see Vol. 1. North America , LJ 3/15/91) contains nearly 150 articles, averaging 2000-2500 words in length, describing a wide and representative range of the Southwestern Pacific's many peoples. For accuracy and comprehensiveness, nothing compares to it. Most of the accounts are by scholars (primarily anthropologists) who have worked for decades with the people they chronicle. Entries include information on geography, language, history, economy, kinship and the family, sociopolitical organization, religion, and art. The uniform format includes descriptions of the island cultures both before and since the arrival of the European colonial powers, thus discouraging the false sense of timelessness that often plagues summary accounts of societies. An invaluable reference tool.
