Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up. A well-researched set that covers a wide range of material. The first volume introduces the historical background, beginning with an article about the difficulty of defining terrorism. Next, 23 brief (1-to-4 page) articles look at events from ancient Greece and Rome, to the French Revolution, to the Amritsar Massacre, to Stalin's reign of terror. The book also includes sections on World War II, and then concludes with a discussion of the different types and techniques of and motivations for terrorism. The second volume concentrates on groups and terrorist activities in the Middle East, Latin America, and post-colonial Asia and Africa (PLO, Tamil Tigers, massacre at Mai Lai, etc.). The third volume looks at the problem in the developed world (IRA, Earth First, Red Brigade, etc., up to the Oklahoma City bombing) and discusses worldwide reactions to terrorism. Articles begin with brief summaries or selected key facts boxed off for quick access and end with suggested readings. Black-and-white photos, some of which are of poor quality, appear throughout. The final volume includes general, name, and geographical indexes, and concludes with a chronology of major terrorist events since 1945 and an A-Z directory of terrorist groups and individuals.?Herman Sutter, Saint Pius X High School, Houston, TX
