Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This highly specialized dictionary is intended for those working in the gearing industry, manufacturing, or engineering design facilities so that standardization in terminology can be maintained. Presented are definitions for materials (copolymer), tools (chuck), and processes (martempering). Computer applications in machine tooling are defined. In addition to gearing terms, acronyms, association names, and personal names are identified. Six appendixes cover the nomenclature for grinding, gaging, hob, gear shaving cutter, milling-cutter, and broaching. Since these are all gear-related, they could just as well have been included in the main part of the dictionary. Also, the Board questions why such terms as time study, combined work, and access time found their way into the dictionary when they have little to do with gears and gearing. All in all, however, this unique dictionary is quite readable, with definitions that are easy to understand and clear drawings as illustrations. It is recommended for engineering and manufacturing libraries as well as university and large public libraries.

This review is from: Encyclopedic Dictionary of Gears and Gearing (Hardcover)
Encyclopedic Dictionary of Gears and Gearing is worth owning. It has many well-drawn illustrations, is organized to be accessable, and reads well. The authors do know what they're talking about.

I have two problems with the book - 1) some very basic gear terms, e.g. "hob" and "hobbing" are undefined, although both terms are frequently used thoughout the text, 2) some of the entries are out of alphabetical order and therefore hard to find, e.g. "nongenerated gear".

Aside from these editorial problems, I learned a good deal quickly from this reference book.
