Weird and wonderful in a manic sort of way,

I saw the "Heligoats" open up for Clem Snide around a year ago and must say, the performance has stuck with me. Chris Otepka's banter at said show was manically brilliant as were the songs he peformed. The first three songs off this EP i would say are some of the catchiest tunes i've heard in sometime. If you are on the fence in whether or not to give this a shot, go ahead and plunge into the weird world of Heligoats. It is a trip, in the sixties sense of the meaning.
Soundwise, it's a lot of acoustic guitar with various other instruments tossed on in to fill in the spaces. Sung with energy, poetic brillance and passion, it is an album worth taking your time to check out. As an aside, go to Daytrotter to download some additional songs to add to the album, as one song off this EP is just noise.

wish it were longer,

very well written songs that take you on a weird trip while making you feel oddly at home. saw this guy open for Clem Snide, and was won over with his honesty. this album employs a full band. live, it was just him and a guitar. i kind of prefer the acoustic journey, but the full band coupled with some electronic tinkering works well. after about 10 spins, i wished there were more songs for me to hum along to. lyrics that stick out to me include, "i cross my legs and turn into a drill," from Been A Drill - which, as he said in his live show, was inspired by a couple that got sent to the hospital, leaving their kids at home, after taking children's Benadryl. it's like Naked Lunch set to good pop music.
