If you are interested in Obituary, I would describe their sound as intelligent and moderately progressive death metal with a more gutteral and abject/pig-gutting vocalist. It really comes together well. It's brutal and gory sounding, not just laden with bloody references.Get this set and the other Roadrunner two CD set. The songwriting is uniformly excellent across all four full-length CDs. Then you have all the essential material from the band's first four albums. The extra tracks included here (and on the other CDs) are mostly live tracks for collection purposes only. The production value of these two CDs, in particular, is top-notch for mid-90's death metal. The remastering is a nice touch, too. Also, the original covers for all original LPs are included inside the case full-size on all of the RR 2-fer CD sets. The guys at RR really have fans/collectors in mind with this whole series--they are all cherry. Plus, these CDs are reasonably priced. There is no reason to buy the old version CDs unless you like the spine or something. Overall, this is a must have if you know your head from your arse when it comes to metal.

Obituary changed the world of Death Metal. When Death Metal was all fast drumming and lightning fast guitar work, and Black Metal was High Pitched vocals (shrills) and more of the same, Obituary came and slowed it down just a bit, and for some reason if just FIT. What really makes Obituary stand out from the others is the vocal work of John Tardy, who I believe might be one of the best vocalist in Death Metal Genere (second to Chris Barnes) These are classics to have in your collection, and even though I am not happy with the direction RoadRunner Records took over the past few years (the dumped almost all their death metal acts and replaced it with the likes of Slipnot and such) my hats off the the label from giving us the "Two from the Vault Series" Its nice to see that the old school death bands are getting remastered and put out in these collections. Hopefully younger audiences will pick up on these, and ditch their Korn, My CHemical Romance, Slipknot, and other nonsense nu Metal bands and learn something about extreme music. Whats even better is there is another Obituary "Two from the Vault" Series. They were one of the best, and still kick some a** today with their new CD "Frozen in Time" If you don't know anything about Obituary, I suggest you get to know them soon..ENJOY

Obituary are best known for their excellent production and cover art not to mention their brutal vocals, and awesome guitar work. This two for one deal from Road Runner was a good idea especially for those Death Metal fans who haven't heard any Obituary before (and lets face it if you haven't heard of these guys then your not truly a Death Metal fan!). Obituary's third album, The End Complete is a more thought-out album then "Cause Of Death" or "Slowly We Rot", but it's not as good as either of them. The promotion for this album was huge compared to the others, and they all found their niches in their sound to really get comfortable with it. There's some great songs on here, most of them a little bit of a progression from "Cause Of Death"'s Celtic Frost-style sound. The solo's may not have been as technical as the one's that James Murphy did, but I think that Allen West learned some good stuff from him. It is arguably their most commercially successful release, their most instantly accessible, and the first album to feature full lyrics for each song. After the underground success of Cause of Death, Obituary returned with original guitarist Allen West replacing Cause's James Murphy at the lead guitar.
By 1992, the band had firmly established themselves as one of Florida's most seminal among Morbid Angel, Deicide and Death. They had also managed to carve a fairly distinct sound for themselves which presents them as instantly recognizable among their peers thanks to two factors: the guitars with tone knobs turned all the way to bass and John Tardy's over-the-top voice which sounds like he's been stabbed several times in the stomach and writhing in pain. The pace is relentless throughout starting with the brooding "I'm In Pain" featuring the typical avalanched drumming and thrashy solos. "Back To One" and "Dead Silence" keep the varied tempo changes, rotten riffs, terror bass lines and excessive vibrato leads flowing, classic stuff. Tardy also throws everything he's got down in his blood drenched throat and the result is brilliant. Next up is the colossal "In The End Of Life", really heavy stuff and no less murky than any of the material on "Slowly We Rot" when descending down to a zombie like breakdown that's disturbing and sedated. Anyway this is just an awesome classic guaranteed to satisfy death metal fans. World Demise is ultimately a weaker album than the 3 that preceded it, and can be seen as another step in the steady decline of the fortunes of one of the world's best death metal bands, but thanks to the bands attempts to progress this still sounds fresh today and remains their only slight deviation from the formula they created on `Slowly We Rot'. Not their best album by any means but still a damn good one. with the bands classic sound intact and heavy as ever, but uniquely amongst their discography it shows them at least trying to do something different, there are a number of samples - notably the shuddering earthquakes and propeller effects in the title track and the tribal rhythms of Kill For Me - while the album artwork sees the band ditching the cool lovecraft inspired artwork for the horrors of reality. Sadly however the one thing that lets this album down is the quality of the songs themselves, as despite the odd exception most of the tracks are slightly weaker than those of previous Obituary albums, with many of the riffs failing to remain long in the memory (ironically the best track is the bonus track Killing Victims Found). It all sounds pretty good though thanks to the Scott Burns production, and the searing guitars and John Tardy's typically immense vocal roars ensure that this is still required listening for any self respecting death metal fan.
