This suite from the end credits of Star Trek - First Contact t contains two of the finest examples of Star Trek music, and some of the best of Jerry Goldsmith's long career.

The two main themes in this track are the Star Trek - The Next Generation theme title theme and the main title theme from this movie. The track opens with the The Best Of Star Trek fanfare by Alexander Courage, and then transitions directly into The Next Generation theme. The theme to Star Trek: The Next Generation was based upon Goldsmith's own main title theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, so this track has a blend of music from two TV series and two films.

The main theme for Star Trek: First Contact is very different from other Star Trek movie music themes. Most Star Trek movie themes either built suspense or grandeur, but this theme seems almost funerary. The mournful trumpet that drives the theme puts the listener into an introspective mood instead of the usual stirring grandeur of a science-fiction action movie theme. The theme does build to a grand scale, but it never takes on the triumphant brass notes that punctuate Goldsmith's earlier Star Trek themes.

Fortunately for those who might find themselves a little too thoughtful at the end of such a gentle and moving piece of music, the Star Trek: The Next Generation theme returns at the end of the piece to close it on emotional high.
