Book Description

January 1, 2003
The End of Free Love evokes the schizophrenia of our times, a community of voices at the zero point. Like the voices that splinter from Marguerite Duras's work, these characters are neurotic, taking refuge in comics, food, music, sex, 'locking' and lies. Violence is everywhere: within, without, in every emotion, in every word. But often hidden emotions rise to the surface, where self-consciousness, shame, and rage, to name a few, are permitted, voiced, and, eventually, set free. Throughout The End of Free Love Steinberg creates a hybrid text, blending poetry and fiction in writing as much about its form as its content. This is fiction that offers itself up for our delight, while remaining as elusive and unpredictable as language itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only thing hotter than Steinberg is her writing, September 17, 2004
This review is from: The End of Free Love (Paperback)
I was a student of Steinberg's at the University of San Francisco and learned so much from her...I thought that as a professor she was amazing but as a writer, she's even moreso. Her text is high art, high quality, lyrical and moving, with your breath catching at the end of every page and your mind catching at every punctuation or line break.

Some stories were so moving that I wept, such as "Life" and "Isla"...they're wrought with passion and brilliance, undertones of smokey sensuality and overtones of violence.

This is truly experimental fiction at it's finest. I say this not as a previous student and friend, but as a critical writer in awe of her genius. She does what Joyce never could; keep a reader heatedly interested through all of his deviances of form and content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real good stuff, September 3, 2004

Susan's stories--as exhibited here in this collection--are a lot of fun. They've got a lovely sense of momentum and pace. These stray from the path of more traditional stories and play with form and lyricism. She inhabits these characters really well. You owe it to yourself to pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Today I Found..., February 18, 2009

This review is from: The End of Free Love (Paperback)
One of her books today. Excerpted. I'm out of the loop--it was pretty good. I got engaged. I might look into it. Experimental fiction that works. Lyrical. Levels. Illuminating. Okay, I live in the country. A hick. I was impressed with "Nothing." I'm Catholic but I've got an ear for it. You know this.
