Book Description

End Malaria is more than a book, it’s a great cause.

At least $20* from each copy sold by us goes directly to Malaria No More to send a mosquito net to a family in need and to support life-saving work in the fight against malaria. Malaria No More, an international advocacy organization, is on a mission to end malaria related deaths by 2015.

In addition to saving lives, buying this book means you can enjoy essays by 62 of American’s favorite business authors, including Tom Peters, Nicholas Carr, Pam Slim, and Sir Ken Robinson. Organized into three main sections—Focus, Courage, Resilience—and eight subsections—Tap Your Strengths, Create Freedom, Love & Be Kind, Disrupt Normal, Take Small Steps, Embrace Systems, Get Physical, Collaborate—all essays in End Malaria share a desire to inspire readers to look within themselves for solutions to their everyday dilemmas and for motivation to realize their desires.

Editor Michael Bungay Stanier envisioned End Malaria as a book that would marry the best writers of the business world to a deserving cause. Michael assembled and edited this collection with a goal to leverage that breadth of expertise these writers represent for an issue of global importance.

At its core, End Malaria is about doing great work including the hard work to save lives. All of the writers in this collection and all of the partners involved have waived fees in order to raise the maximum amount of money.

*In the UK at least £12 from each copy of End Malaria sold by Amazon will be donated to Malaria No More by The Domino Project and Amazon. In Germany, at least €13 from each copy of End Malaria will be donated to Malaria No More by The Domino Project and Amazon.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"How can you resist a book that's both chock full of brilliant insights from creative thinkers and has as its mission the end of a killer disease? Read, pray, love."
--Stew Friedman, author of Total Leadership: Be a Better Leader, Have a Richer Life and Practice Professor at the Wharton School

"End Malaria
succeeds wildly on so many levels. First of all, one of my favorite thought leaders has given me his wisdom on doing Great Work (and I have already re-read and shared several times his excellent essay "I'm Scarred"). Secondly, he has brought me the wisdom of his extended tribe of peers and friends. I like the company he keeps. Lastly, but most profoundly, it gets something important done now. How often can you feed your brain and soul and save a life at the same time? I'm going to buy a stack and give them to those I love. Oh, and I'm going to save a life each time. Now that's Great Work!";
--Michael Leckie, VP EXP, Gartner

From the Author

A Q&A with Michael Bungay Stanier, Senior Partner at Box of Crayons and Editor of End Malaria

Question: Michael, how did you get the idea for this project?

Michael Bungay Stanier: In my last book, Do More Great Work, I talk about the power of focusing on a "Great Work Project" to channel your energy and focus on doing Great Work--the work that you care about, the work that makes a difference, the work that matters.

So in the middle of 2010, I sat down to ask myself what my Great Work Project would be, and the idea for the first version of this book appeared.

Question: The first version?

Michael Bungay Stanier: It's gone through quite a few iterations. First, it was going to be just an ebook that would be free (and hopefully viral), with requests to donate baked into it. Then it turned into a book, but I couldn't quite figure out how to get the money from the sales to the charity. And then finally into what it is today.

Question: Why malaria?

Michael Bungay Stanier: When I was thinking about my Great Work Project, I thought about having an impact at a global scale. That was fairly overwhelming, but I did some research and found that $10--the cost of a mosquito net--is the cheapest unit of global change.

Malaria is a scourge--a child dies of it every 45 seconds--and nowhere more so than in Africa. For $10, you can save lives. I though I could try and raise $10 per book. (And of course, we're actually raising twice that.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Help save lives by helping yourself September 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If you're a fan of Seth Godin and other motivational, inspirational writers then you will find 'End Malaria' a real treat.

Packed full of short essays, tips and insights from over 60 of the world's leading thinkers and business brains, the purpose of this book is not only to inspire and engage the reader to bigger and better things in their own life but to actually participate in a much higher purpose by saving the lives of others.

Released on 7th September 2011 as part of 'End Malaria Day' - $20 dollars (around Ł12 GBP) from each physical copy sold (and the full amount of each Kindle version) will be donated to 'Malaria No More', an international advocacy organisation on a mission to end malaria-related deaths by 2015. This money will be used to pay for mosquito nets which are proven to be one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce deaths and increase life expectancy in malaria-ridden countries.

Please buy this book and play your part in saving lives today.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Excuses September 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book contains great contributions from smart authors -- they'll inspire you to do better work, become an artist and a leader, and truly make an impact in the world. I loved it, and that's a fact. But to be honest, that's not why you should buy it.

Almost anyone reading this can spare $20. If you can't (and please think seriously about it if you think that's the case), you can afford 20 minutes of emailing and tweeting and blogging about it. Every sale of this book saves lives -- real people's lives -- and that makes it a no brainer. If 100,000 books get sold, 4 million lives get saved. You have no excuse to bow out; your internet connection suggests that your life is full of luxuries that most of us will likely take for granted. $20 is a few cups of coffee. Buy the book. Benefit from the content. And make the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars +1 for this great book, -1 for malaria September 7, 2011
Format:Paperback
Mosquitoes have always had a thing for my wife Jolie. When she contracted malaria, we lived on a hospital ship in West Africa. During two bed-ridden weeks, she was well-cared for--eventually making a complete recovery and remembering to wear bug spray more often. Unfortunately, many others aren't as lucky. Let's end malaria for everyone. This book can help.

More About the Author

"An autobiography is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful. A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats." George Orwell

Michael was banned from his high school reunion for "the balloon incident", was sued by one of his Law School lecturers for defamation, gave himself a concussion digging a hole as a laborer, was fired on his first shift as a garage attendant and has held a number of jobs where he had little or no impact.

Luckily, there's also been some upside. He is the author of a number of successful books including the best sellers 'End Malaria' (which raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Malaria No More) and 'Do More Great Work: stop the busywork and start the work that matters'. He is also the founder and Senior Partner of Box of Crayons (BoxOfCrayons.biz), and was the first Canadian Coach of the Year and a Rhodes Scholar.

Before Box of Crayons, he was the first employee for what is now the world's largest independent innovation agency, and while most of what he invented never saw the light of day, he did have a hand in Pizza Hut's stuffed crust pizza. He has also spent time as a change management consultant where he batted about average for the industry for really successful change projects - 10% or so. His only lasting impact in this role was writing the global vision for GlaxoSmithKline, something that has lasted more than a decade even though it took almost no time at all to create.

Box of Crayons is a company that helps organizations around the world do less Good Work and more Great Work. They have particular expertise with organizations in the financial, professional service, pharmaceutical and consumer goods market sectors, and particular success with organizations with engaged but overwhelmed employees. Box of Crayons' premier product is the Coaching for Great Work program which gives time-stretched managers and leaders practical coaching skills that stick. It is delivered by a global cadre of program leaders.

Michael created The Eight Irresistible Principles of Fun (EightPrinciples.com), a short internet movie seen by millions, and some other movies seen by a lot fewer people (The 5¾ Questions You've Been Avoiding, Great Work Alchemy and 11 Words for 2011).

Michael speaks regularly to audiences around the world. Highlights include speaking at Google, the HRPA and SHRM conferences, the Rural Women of Manitoba conference and anywhere that's vaguely warm during wintertime in Toronto, his home.

"If I had to pick a person to have dinner with, when I need to be prodded and challenged and inspired to think about the things I really am committed to think about for myself and what I'm doing, I'd pick Michael Bungay Stanier. He has an ability to shake our tree and make us more conscious and responsible about what we know but aren't willing to admit we know yet."
David Allen, author of Getting Things Done
