Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The new American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore is devoted to collecting and exhibiting self-taught "intuitive" artists, whose work is often compulsive, bizarre, intricately detailed, and marked by erotic or political overtones. This work, the record of an exhibition at the museum, focuses on the "End of the World" as interpreted by the occasionally tortured vision of some 50 artists working in various countries at different times, from early in this century to the present. Interspersed with the hundreds of color reproductions, photographs, and artist biographies are writings by such diverse figures as the Dalai Lama, scientist Stephen Jay Gould, self-taught Georgia artist Rev. Howard Finster (whose work is also in this show), and the evangelist St. John, as well as an essay by curator Roger Manley. Because of the growing popularity of the genre, this book is recommended for all art collections.?Margarete Gross, Chicago P.L.

Review

"The obsessiveness, the intensity and yes, sometimes the just plain madnss that characterize what's called outsider art also account for its extraordinary vitality and the direct impact of these images on the viewer. There's no polite art-museum glimpsing of this work. It smacks you in the eyes. Just in book form there are many frightening, depressing or exalting visions here. If nothing else, The End is Near should put to rest any questions of whether "outsider" art should be studied, collected or shown in museums at all. " -- John Strausbaugh, New York Press

"The perfect Christmas gift for John Waters. A revelation from beginning to end." -- Flaunt Magazine

"This book is recommended for all art collections." -- Margaret Gross, Library Journal

"Without question the slickest, classiest, hippest, heaviest, headiest Outsider Art publication of the yea. One might be tempted to call it the contemporary Zeitgeist of Outsider Art." -- Michael Bonesteel, The Outsider

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and thought-provoking, February 24, 1999

This review is from: The End is Near!: Visions of Apocalypse, Millennium and Utopia (Hardcover)
By showing the amazing collection of the American Museum of Visionary Art, this book provokes the reader to re-think the distinctions our society draws between genius and madness. I've actually been to the Museum in Baltimore and am thrilled that this artwork is now available on a large scale. This book may not be for everyone, but those willing to expose themselves to its often disturbing imagery will be rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars visionary beautiful terrifying cathartic funny, February 22, 1999
This review is from: The End is Near!: Visions of Apocalypse, Millennium and Utopia (Hardcover)
this is a coffee-table book for the mind and the soul. the images are excrutiating and beautiful; sometimes i will sit for hours with this book, sometimes i give it a quick flip - the opus works both ways. a timely and impressive work. these artists are prophetic anti-heroes throbbing and sobbing at the fringes of society.

4.0 out of 5 stars The End is Near!, December 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The End is Near!: Visions of Apocalypse, Millennium and Utopia (Hardcover)
The End is Near! reveals a strong spiritual kingship between these brilliant minds of today and major luminaries of the past like Hieronymus Bosch, William Blake and Emmanuel Swedenborg. It hints at shared understanding between self-taught contemporary visionaries and such ancient prophetic traditions found in Classical Greece, Aboriginal Australia and the seers of the Holy Scriptures. Included in The End is Near! is the entire Revelation of St. John the Divine, perhaps the most influential and widely-referenced- yet rarely read -work on the ultimate fate of humanity and the universe. The End is Near! should become compulsory reading for anyone intrigued by the mysteries, depths, and triumphs of the human spirit.
