He documents such obstacles as armed conflict, harsh weather and sprawling poverty in Congo, India, Pakistan, Somalia and Sudan. Inspired, Salagdo noted that "The immense efforts to eradicate polio have renewed my hope, my faith in solutions". The book includes a substantial essay by UNICEF writer Siddarth Dube, born on the day in 1961 that his brother was diagnosed with the disease. The book also includes a comprehensive history of the disease in the form of an illustrated timeline.

Sebasti"o Salgado was born in Brazil and currently resides in Paris with his family. He is among the best-known documentary photographers working today.
