This book is a study of commmposition.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The End of Print: The Graphic Design of David Carson (Paperback)
If it weren't for the experimentations of David Carson, I would not be a graphic designer today. I'd probably be teaching painting somewhere hating life. The End of Print is a study in composition and type. Typography can be the most imaginative, illustrative aspect of a design, and Carson has brought this thinking to a generation of designers, myself included. People are starting to read again and he is one of the reasons, along with a hand ful of other designers who revolutionized the field in the late 80's and early 90's. Stale and stagnant is what design would be toda, I think that Carson is one of the pioneers of graphic design, and The End of Print should be used as an influence for anyone who considers graphic design as a career choice

A MUST HAVE REFERENCE!,

I cant tell you how many times I return to this book for idea generation. "Dirty" design at its best. This book is better than the sequel but both are worth the investment.

I thought the book was very inspirational, with many many many examples of Carson's rule-breaking design. Definately a must own for those with a fresh and adventurous take on design. However, this book is not for designers who cling to 'the grid' like a baby blanket or those who tremble at the idea of pushing the limits of visual communication.

This book inspired me to try new techniques with typography and is a must for any modern designer! The book contains a lot of David Carson's early work as well as some really great ads for Ray Gun Magazine. I definately recommend picking this one up just to view such innovative work!

This review is from: The End of Print: The Graphic Design of David Carson (Paperback)
Completely creative, cutting edge, and visually stimulating. David Carson's look at typography is a real eye opener to new and extreme avenues that this design element can bring. It's a fabulous resource, full of wonderful photography and great ideas. It's a great tool for designers and students alike. Very helpful and well worth the money.

am i missing something?,
This review is from: The End of Print: The Graphic Design of David Carson (Paperback)
After reading all these 5 star reviews i wondered whether i read the same book. Although this isn't a reading book at all. Maybe it's more suited to typographers or font design, but i found it to be page after page of much the same stuff. Don't get me wrong, i think he has a unique and dramatic design style, but after a few pages it all gets a bit boring. If you're looking for inspiration for graphic or web design, look somewhere else.

Great Book - Not for Beginners,
By
This review is from: The End of Print: The Grafik Design of David Carson (Paperback)
This is a great book that shows the examples of one of the most influential designers today. David Carson's design show how he breaks the rules of typography and design using his deconstructive design. Because he break the rules I would not recommend this book to a beginner. It is more geared towards some one who has already learned the basics of design and looking for inpsiration. I found that out the hardway.

David Carson is the only original designer since the Bauhaus. His work breaks the mold of the ever increasingly boring grids. Enough can't be said for his contributions to print, type, and web design. He is in a class by himself. Yes, there alot of wannabes now. But it all started with Carson. It is seldom that there is a true original, especially in the tight laced world of graphics. He is the singular, groundbreaking designer that changed the face of things.

Must have for any serious designer,

While many people consider David Carson's work far too "outrageous" for mainstream corporate design, his influence cannot be underestimated. This book will, if nothing else, inspire you to re-examine all the projects you have in-house. And, if you are like me, cause you to "push" the envelope" on your next project. I cannot recommend it highly enough
