Book Description

Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching August 2005
After the horrors and violence of the twentieth century, words can seem futile, while mass communication tends to keep our thinking and talking at a flat mediocrity. In "The End of Words," noted author Richard Lischer examines how preaching — speaking Christian truth — compares to other linguistic vocations of our day. Along the way he opens a path from language's disappointments and dead ends to its true end.

"The End of Words" shows how faithful reading of Scripture rather than flashy performance paves the way for effective preaching, and it challenges conventional storytelling with a deeper and more biblical view of narrative preaching. The ultimate purpose of preaching, Lischer argues, is to bring about God's reconciliation in the world; more than ever Christians need to speak words of peace.

While Lischer's "End of Words" will surely be invaluable to pastors and preachers, his open, readable style will appeal to anyone concerned with speaking Christianly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rev. Dr. Dena Williams, Denver, CO, August 14, 2009

Eloquent, inspiring, healing for all who do their best in the pulpit. Preaching-a most demanding and wonderful and costly call. Lischer's encouragment, his challenge and hope, appeared on my Kindle at a critical juncture for me and I imagine for others who often feel under siege in the parish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful commentary on preaching in the contemporary, April 5, 2008
Richard Lischer offers a powerful and provocative definition of preaching in the modern world. He portrays the homiletical task as beyond bland labels and simplistic theories and restores the prophetic and critical nature of preaching. This book is a good read for those who have completed an introductory course in preaching. I recommend it for the thoughtful pastor.

Richard Lischer faces head on the foolishness of preaching in a world that is simultaneously vapid and violent. What preacher hasn't asked, does what I do matter? Does preaching matter? Lisher's well crafted book inspires us to trust the one who gives dry bones life.
