5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
As an addictions counselor, I highly recommend this book. The approach is something most doctors overlook...our nutrition and how it affects our feelings, neurotransmitters and over all health.

2.0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot but this book alone is not enough to end your addiction
I've been addicted to anime/manga/alcohol/pornography for so many years. Though, this book help me in some level, it didn't help me so much on reducing my cravings in a long term.

2.0 out of 5 stars I learned a lot but this book alone is not enough to end your addiction, November 14, 2010
This review is from: End Your Addiction Now: A Proven Nutritional Supplement Program That Can Set You Free (Paperback)
I've been addicted to anime/manga/alcohol/pornography for so many years. Though, this book help me in some level, it didn't help me so much on reducing my cravings in a long term.

I'm still far from being cured but my addiction improved when I read the Alcoholism and Addiction Cure by Chris Prentiss. I combine it with the things I learned from Charles Gant's book.

I notice that my cravings will be severe based on my "state of mind." Even if I'm taking large doses of amino acid I learned from this book, my cravings is still VERY strong based on my emotional state. It happens on time whenever I got traumatic events, wrong mindset and beliefs, something like that.

So, basically I learned that I could control my addiction the most if I have the right mindset. (which I learned from Chris Prentiss books)

Respects,
John

5.0 out of 5 stars Works, really., February 1, 2011
This review is from: End Your Addiction Now: A Proven Nutritional Supplement Program That Can Set You Free (Paperback)
I have only a rudimentary understanding of the chemistry behind the theories here, but the text is written in easily understood language and makes sense. Most importantly, it works. Author is honest about timelines, withdrawal, etc. When you read something that promises an almost instant benefit, you're naturally skeptical, but the supplements suggested work immediately. You can feel a difference in mood, energy level, and optimism right away. You really can use this program to kick your cigarette, alcohol, drug, or carb addiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for garden variety addicitons, November 11, 2011

This review is from: End Your Addiction Now: A Proven Nutritional Supplement Program That Can Set You Free (Paperback)
I'm not even sure why I read this book, but it opened my eyes to a new understanding of nutrition. I don't have what most people think of when they think of addiction: drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc. But I DO have an addiction to carbs, just like probably every person walking down the street with an expanding waistline. And for me, this book stopped that expansion in its tracks.

Before reading this book, I had only a vague understanding of what neurotransmitters were and how important they are for the brain. I had NO idea more are produced in the gut than in the brain and how you treat your gut is going to impact everything from cognitive function to every aspect of your mood. Once that door is opened, nutrition becomes awe inspiring.

Dr. Gant puts forward the idea that when you become deficient in a particular neurotransmitter, through poor nutrition, mal-absorption or genetics, you settle on a "drug of choice" to cope. But this only makes things worse because instead of your body getting what it needs to produce the neurotransmitter itself, it relies on an unsatisfactory crutch. Plus, more than one neurotransmitter may be involved so more than one crutch may be sought.

He has put together tests in the book to help you discover in which areas you might have deficiencies. Through his three decades of experience treating people with addictions, he has discovered different neurotransmitters correlate with specific "crutches". But if you don't have any of the traditional addictions, these tests may be of limited value. It's too bad because he gives the nod to the fact that sugar/carbs are some of the most addictive substances there are, but then doesn't really address them in this book as much as he does the traditional addictions. Even so, the book has opened my eyes and changed my life where none of the typical low carb or sugar busters books worked for me previously. It's not a question of eliminating a crutch - it's a question of giving your body the building blocks it was designed to use to construct its essential scaffolding itself and Dr. Gant's book is an invaluable first step.

The major focus of the book is on healing the brain neurotransmitters. If they work right, you work right. Various chapters cover overcoming sugar addiction, smoking, alcohol abuse, cocaine, painkillers, marijuana and more. Specific nutrients for each disorder are outlined so that you can take immediate action to start healing your body and brain. Every rehab center in the country should also have this book to help prevent client relapse.

I also recommend this book by Dr Gant: ADD & ADHD: Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) Solutions

This book is excellent as it gives you a whole plethora of information that is either contrary OR complementary to traditional approaches to addiction.

Also, it's simple. Just read, understand what and how it pertains to you, follow through. The information is rather common sensical but many will guffaw that this is pure snake oil sales pitch.

Try it, you'll like it.

In order for this to work, you must be patient. In some people, like myself, it may take months. The nurients need to build up in your body before you notice their effects. If your mind keeps telling you to quit but your body keeps doing the same things, then there is a disconnect between your mind and body. The body might not have nutrients, physical material, to carry out the instructions of the mind. This is where this book will help.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vitamins help with detox, July 2, 2011

I am about to try and detox from morphine and ativan and it was helpful to know that there are supplements that can possibly help. Not really sure if they will work but it gives me hope especially since I have been on the tranquilizer, ativan (1-6 mgs) for 10 years, when I started having daily migraines. I have heard that ativan can be harder to get off of than heroin. I think a big warning leaflet should be given to anyone contemplating taking them. Some of the places he mentioned at the back of the book were no longer current, but overall I found the book very helpful. It opened up a whole new arena for help.
