Book Description

July 1, 2010 Fulcrum Press

Urban sprawl, wasteful water use, increasingly ferocious wildfires, changing weather patterns, chronic political infighting. These are but a few of the problems facing animal and plant species throughout the United States and the world. One law, the Endangered Species Act, serves as the primary safety net for protecting wildlife driven to the brink. Can it save us from an extinction crisis?

In Endangered, award-winning journalist Mitch Tobin investigates the threats to our planet and offers solutions to potential disaster. Tobin reports from the front lines of Endangered Species Act battles, using America's hottest, driest, fastest-growing region—the Southwest—as a snapshot of the complex and myriad issues confronting imperiled species. These firsthand accounts, eloquently and thoughtfully told, explain the challenges of protecting the natural world and give hope for ecosystems thrown off balance.

Mitch Tobin worked as a journalist from 1999 to 2006, covering wildlife, wildfires, and other environmental issues for the Tucson Citizen, Arizona Daily Star, and High Country News. Endangered grew out of Tobin's yearlong series on Arizona's endangered species, which was a finalist for the John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism. His work was honored in the Best of the West competition and received first prizes from the Arizona Press Club and Arizona Associated Press Managing Editors. Today, Tobin serves as a consultant to leading conservation groups and foundations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Little in Mitch Tobin's deeply reported book about the landmark legislation is pat or predictable... This kind of deep, resource-intensive reporting is itself an endangered species." - Utne Reader

"Tobin - with meticulously researched reportage and a hands-on approach - reminds readers that the American Southwest is the real ground zero in the ongoing battle to better manage and protect the nation's precious wildlife." -Pasatiempo

“On the surface, Endangered is a comprehensive environmental history of the American Southwest (Arizona and New Mexico, and pieces of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Texas). But this is really just the background through which Tobin cleverly weaves his tale of the ESA and the various fault lines it has created in both the political and the natural worlds.” -Tucson Weekly

“. . . the author pulls the Endangered Species Act out of the political catfight that often impedes its enforcement and sheds light on the act's intricacies, using science and a keen human element as his great illuminators . . . His engaging portraits of the movers and shakers on both ends of the political spectrum reveal some surprising results in the biodiversity blame game . . .”-Santa Fe New Mexican

“Mitch Tobin takes us to the edge of life. Mass extinction is now our way of death and unless we heed this clear-eyed book with vivid examples from the Southwest, well, we’re going to be home alone.”  -Charles Bowden, author of Down by the River and Murder City

"In Endangered: Biodiversity on the Brink, Mitch Tobin examines the messy battles that surround the Endangered Species Act. Endangered is dense yet engaging, and it is at its best when Tobin draws in his experiences as a journalist. Tobin repeatedly shows how competing interests over endangered species are embroiled in battles that extend beyond environmental issues, and reveals how the individuals involved do not fit readymade typecasts. For anyone with even a faint interest in the Southwest, Endangered is highly recommended." -Steven Kwan, Arizona Daily Wildcat

"Tobin - with meticulously researched reportage and a hands-on-approach - reminds readers that the American Southwest is the real ground zero in the ongoing battle to better manage and protect the nation's previous wildlife." -Pasatiempo

As a reporter, Mitch was certified as a wildland firefighter by the Coronado National Forest, which allowed him to embed with crews battling some of the largest blazes in the Southwest's recorded history. Tobin's coverage of the 2002 wildfires, including the 470,000-acre Rodeo-Chediski Fire, was honored in the Best of the West contest.

Mitch is a now consultant with California Environmental Associates, a San Francisco-based firm that helps foundations and NGOs with strategic and business planning. At CEA, Mitch was lead writer of the Design to Win report, which outlined an investment strategy for philanthropists interested in fighting global warming. This review is from: Endangered: Biodiversity on the Brink (Fulcrum Press) (Hardcover)
"This is an engaging and very well written book about endangered species in the Southwest. It is very informative. The author presents the complexities of issues affecting endangered species while also giving helpful insights into strategies for preserving these species. Reading this book gives me a much better understanding of the applicable challenges. The focus is on the American Southwest but the author's insights are pertinent to all areas."

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, that's a condor on the cover, August 15, 2010
This review is from: Endangered: Biodiversity on the Brink (Fulcrum Press) (Hardcover)
The California condor is the iconic image of the issue of endangered species. Tobin watches as condor #134 receives mouth to beak recussitation in an eventually failed effort to revive and rehabilitate him in an operating room in the back of the Phoenix Zoo. We thought we were winning with the condors, but we are not. Journey with Mitch Tobin both physically and historically as he takes us through the skirmishes, battles, and wars to save the species and the planet. His research on the Endangered Species Act will reveal the backstory on the California condor, snail darter, the spotted owl, the Mexican wolf, and other species we know only because their survival would somehow block progress. This book is a stark reminder that there are battles still to be won and other fronts opened because of climate change and our societal response to it. His writing is similtaneously razor sharp with journalistic fact checking and as companionable as a fireside story. I live in Colorado and I now mourn for the bleak future of the humpback chub. An excellent introduction and overview of the status of endangered species for all audiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ecology and natural resource policy tome in beach novel form, June 18, 2010
This review is from: Endangered: Biodiversity on the Brink (Fulcrum Press) (Hardcover)
This book is a page turner, full of captivating stories and characters (of a range of species). At the same time, it is a sobering dissection of the complex web of forces pushing many species towards extinction. Tobin is a fantastic story teller and a clear thinker - Endangered is a must read for anyone whose heart has been moved by the vistas and wild lands of the Southwest.
