Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8--After an introductory chapter discussing why many birds are in trouble in North America (mainly through loss of pristine habitat), Sayre goes on to focus on five specific birds to demonstrate the difficulties endangered species face. She includes the snail kite, Kirtland's warbler, the red-cockaded woodpecker, the piping plover, and the whooping crane, a bellwether for avian populations at-risk. Interspersed in the text are boxes of information (some covering two pages) on conservation efforts, such as condor captive-breeding programs, and protections, such as punishing egg collectors. The text is clear, readable, and larded with bright-color photos and habitat maps. A section on how readers can help birds is appended; it includes addresses of conservation organizations working toward habitat improvement and other kinds of volunteer activities. The bibliography includes Web sites. Birds are in trouble, and this rather handsome, informative book can certainly raise awareness of their plight.
