Makes me wish I had millions to give to help them, and keep them safe. And the people that devote their lifes to the Bonobos are amazing. And Kudos to Elliot Schrefer.

My high school daughter wanted a break from her classics, and she is a wildlife advocate, so this book was up her alley. She said that there were some sad parts and she had to put it down for a bit, but she is hoping to read another book by Schrefer.

My daughter enjoys books with these kinds of themes, so this one definitely interested her. She recommends it to kids 12 and up who don't have nightmares regularly

This YA novel is quite good in portraying the chaos in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the devastating effects on both the human and animal populations. Human greed has a long history of pain and destruction; usually visited on the most vulnerable. However, the centerpiece of the novel, fourteen-year-old Sofie, is not nearly as realistic or believable. She twice refuses evacuation during a violent rebellion, and instead proceeds to travel, on foot, through the country with only Otto, a young bonobo, as a companion. The country is overwhelmed with murder, torture, and an severe lack of food and clean water, but Sofie takes off on her own. I know the author wanted to portray Sofie as a strong, determined individual, but Sofie is just too young to pull of the physical and psychological hardships of her journey realistically. The book would have rung truer if Sofie had been a little older.

I read this book for a Young Adult Literature class and was absolutely blown away by it. Honestly, I didn't expect to like it based on the description on the back of the book, and I'm not really great at writing reviews for books, but I never really expected to fall in love with characters in this book the way that I did--especially given that one of the characters was a bonobo chimp! Schrefer crafted this story so beautifully and wrote a book so engaging that I had to tear myself away from the pages to sleep! It is one of those rare YA fiction books that doesn't center itself around a comically stereotypical male protagonist and his love interest. Highly recommend.

Amazing book!! It has great details and it tells a heart warming emotional story. This book is about an amazing girl and her companion a bonobo monkey named Otto. This book tells a amazing story about a girl named Sophie who risks her life for the little orphaned bonobo she rescued from a horrible place. Great book one of my favorite books i've ever read. Would recommend for 11 and older to read on there own cause it has some hard words to read. Otherwise if you have kids who are younger then that you still shouldn't let them miss out, you should read it to them!
Please read this book!
