Book Description

February 1992 5 and upK and upEndangered Animals (Crabtree Hardcover)
Dave Taylor's exciting Endangered Animals Series explains why some species have become extinct and what is being done to protect the animals currently threatened. Divided by habitat, each book features approximately ten animals describing:
-- their behavior
-- how they live
-- how they have adapted to their climate
-- why various habitats are essential to the earth
-- why the destruction of these ecosystems is so disastrous to the wildlife that inhabit them

Whether their habitats are in the rainforests of Brazil or the redwood forests of California, the forest creatures of the world are losing their habitats through logging. Animals include:
-- chimpanzee
-- Siberian tiger
-- gray wolf
-- jaguar
-- lowland gorilla
-- orangutan
-- Asian elephant
-- parrots

Taken from Chapter 10: The Asian elephant Today there are fewer than 50,000 wild Asian elephants left in the world. That number is decreasing quickly for several reasons. The Asian elephant's natural home is the tropical forests of India and Asia. Much of this habitat has now been destroyed. As farmer's clear more of the forest to plant crops, many elephants must move to the open plains, where they are easy targets for hunters and traders. Most wild elephants are now found in a few national parks.
