Book Description

December 1992 5 and upK and upEndangered Animals (Crabtree Hardcover)
Dave Taylor's exciting Endangered Animals Series explains why some species have become extinct and what is being done to protect the animals currently threatened. Divided by habitat, each book features approximately ten animals describing:
-- their behavior
-- how they live
-- how they have adapted to their climate
-- why various habitats are essential to the earth
-- why the destruction of these ecosystems is so disastrous to the wildlife that inhabit them

The special problems faced by island animals such as imported predators and overhunting has put a number of island species on the endangered list. Animals include:
-- green sea turtles
-- giant tortoises
-- lemurs
-- land iguana
-- Rothchild's myna
-- monk seals
-- American crocodile
-- mouflon

Editorial Reviews

Review

A fine book that talks about endangered island wildlife. This series is great! -- School Librarians' Book Reviews, May 1993

The attractive layout with an easy-to-read vocabulary level makes these book appealing to a wide audience. The interesting informative text with the accompanying glossary and index adds to the usefulness of these books as school research resources -- CM, Sept. 1993

Taken from Chapter 9: Monk seals Vanishing monks The Caribbean monk seal is believed to be extinct. It was hunted for its fat, called blubber, and has not been sighted since 1952. There are fewer than 500 monk seals living in the Mediterranean. Scientists feel that their chances of survival are low because of the large number of boats in the Mediterranean area. The population of the Hawaiian monk seal is also decreasing because of human interference in its habitat.
