From School Library Journal
Gr 5-8--Sherrow presents a clear and reasoned look at Caribbean manatees, bowhead whales, Mount Graham squirrels, long-nosed bats, gray and red wolves, black-footed ferrets and black-tailed prairie dogs, and Florida panthers. She discusses the animals' physical features, behavior, the history of their decline in numbers, and efforts being made on their behalf. Good-quality full-color photographs and maps that show the range of habitation for each species are helpful additions. In conclusion, the author stresses the importance of individual commitment to the conservation of natural resources and support of environmental issues. Appended lists include organizations to contact and some wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, and natural history museums to visit. A useful addition for reports.
