Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An examination of 28 indigenous groups threatened with extinction as a result of industrial development and political policy.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Davidson, who has long worked for Native Alaskans' rights, argues eloquently for help in their efforts to survive. Photographs, too, are well used; vivid close-ups capture confident maturity, the patience of long-time survivors, and healthy, open faces of children, with some choice panoramas of their environments. The text combines their testimony and views with Davidson's personal experiences and sharp criticism of callous superpowers and local governments. Many indigenous groups face extinction, some inevitably. Others have capable, articulate, and educated leaders who understand the hazardous, value-based choice to hold with their past as they work on their future. Confident they have something to teach money-oriented cultures about living in harmony with all things, they argue for saving endangered human cultures, too. Virginia Dwyer --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazingly prudent call for action, February 19, 2000

Most books of this type deal with Earth's disapperaring cultures in a "laundry list" fashion, shelving away race after race as if they were mere groceries. Not so with this outstanding volume - it delves deep into the society of these hardy societies and focuses on their everyday hardships. Life accounts bring the pages of this book to life with true emotions of fear and uncertainty, distress and need. A definite must-read for those whose views are a tad bit too narrow - I presume that's most of us.

Hi, what a great if tragic book, its a revelation of how we humans the most advanced of species kill off/ annihilate/ totally terminate our fellow species - other humans of a different tribe. Begs the questions- how many Hitlers can we have? Some tribes have been totally annihilated off the surface of the earth - how sad is that eh? Imagine if it was your people! Its about time we learn to live in tolerance and adopt the policy of live and let live and stop our greed. Its a book I feel EVERYONE MUST READ - if you cant get a copy borrow it from your library and make sure you return it so others can read it as well, thats what I did and I bought a copy as it was such an eyeopener. A great book to treasure. Heman
