Editorial Reviews

"Endangered Species" is Tony White's unique and beautifully animated homage to the finest classical moments in animation history. White pours all his soul and passion into this heartfelt attempt to fight for what he believes is the finest art-form of the 20th century... traditional, hand-drawn animation. This finely-crafted short recreates many of the great magical moments in animation's 100 year history. The film also highlights a time-line that honors animation's evolving progress... i.e. from the earliest films of the silent film era, to the 'golden era' of Disney, through the triumphant advent of Pixar and on to the great masterwork of Miyazaki.

1) This DVD also contains an archive copy of White's amazing British Academy Award-winning film, "Hokusai ~ An Animated Sketchbook". Since it's acclaimed release almost three decades ago, this unique short has become a perennial animated 'classic' never before available on DVD.

2) An archive compilation of White's favorite advertising work, most of which was created at his own London studio during the 1980's and 90's. Kicking-off with some of the very first commercials that Tony ever animated, this time-capsule collection of never-seen advertising work represents just part of the director's 30+ year career as one of the busiest director/animators of the 2D commercials era.

FOUNDER: "Animaticus Foundation", formed to 'preserve', 'teach' and 'evolve' the art of traditional 2D animation in this digital age... as well as the "2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival", featuring such keynote speakers such as Roy E. Disney, Tom Wilson, Don Hahn, Michelle Gagne, Dean Yeagle, Barry Cook and Tomm Moore.

AUTHOR: "The Animator's Workbook" (Watsom-Guptill ~ 1986), "Animation from Pencils to Pixels ~ Classical Techniques for Digital Animators" (Focal Press ~ 2006) and "How To Make Animated Films" (Focal Press ~ 2009).

DIRECTOR/ANIMATOR: Of over 200+ TV commercials for the UK and international advertising industry... many of which were award-winning.

FILMMAKER: Short film, "Hokusai ~ An Animated Sketchbook" (British Academy Award). PBS Special "Cathedral" (Blue Ribbon Award). 7 x 26-minute TV drama series "Ink Thief" (Honored Finalist at the New York Film and Television Awards).

PEDIGREE: 2 years as personal Assistant to Richard Williams, including work on "A Christmas Carol" (Oscar for Best Animated Short). 5 Years Director/Animator at the Richard Williams Studio in London, including Director/Designer/Writer/Animator on "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" movie titles (Design & Art Director Silver Award). Studied advanced animation techniques extensively with Ken Harris (original lead animator of "Bugs Bunny," "Roadrunner," etc. at Warner Brothers) and Art Babbit (original lead animator on "Pinocchio," "Fantasia," etc. at Disney).

LECTURER: To numerous international audiences, including the Norwegian Film Institute - Oslo, Swedish Film Institute - Stockholm, Tri-be-ca Grill Guest Director - New York, Israel Animation Guild - Tel Aviv, etc. Featured in multiple television and print interviews.

DIRECTOR'S QUOTE: "To be perfectly honest, Endangered Species was a bitter-sweet experience for me. 'Bitter' because it was a film that needed to be made... in the sense that it brought into focus a great, great tradition that is now becoming lost, wholesale, in the digital revolution. But also 'sweet'... in the sense that it did at least allow me to bring the more amazing aspects of this long line of artistic achievement to the attention of a more contemporary audience. By studying and analyzing some of the finest animated scenes ever created, it was as if I sat at the feet of some of the greatest masters animators that have ever been and have them share their secrets with me." ~ Tony White.
