Book Description

Pitt Poetry Series April 28, 2008

"Known for his commanding stage presence as a reader, McDaniel trades hard in his fourth book on his rough-and-tumble persona--a recovering addict from the working class streets--while also showing softer sides. McDaniel's sometimes awkward, if earnest searching might just be what allows him to find moments of great beauty, humor and stillness." --Publishers Weekly

“McDaniel is known for his talent performing his poems, however his voice doesn’t lose its impact in written form. It may be more powerful because the reader can view the poet’s unique ideas and phrases over and over until their various meanings sink in.” —Gently Read Literature

"McDaniel zings metaphors across the page like he's the Robin Williams of poetry. This collection in frequently moving and inventive with enough lightheartedness and whimsy to balance the heaviness of the darker moments." --hipbooksterclub.com

Jeffrey McDaniel is the author of Alibi School, The Forgiveness Parade, and The Splinter Factory. His work has appeared in a number of anthologies, including Best American Poetry 1994, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, and New (American) Poets. He has won several awards, including an NEA Fellowship. He teaches creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Known for his commanding stage presence as a reader, McDaniel trades hard in his fourth book on his rough-and-tumble persona-a recovering addict from the working class streets-while also showing softer sides. One poem brazenly describes "boner etiquette," while another marvels at the birth of a daughter. These poems feel as if they are made for performance, paying less attention to the materiality of language than to speaking in a clear and strong voice, and some jokes fall flatter on the page than they would on stage, such as the tiny poem "Trent Lott Addresses the Log Cabin Republicans": "We know what you're doing,/ in them cabins,/ with all them logs." At times, one may wish for a little less cliché and easy epiphany, but McDaniel's sometimes awkward, if earnest searching might just be what allows him to find moments of great beauty, humor and stillness: "...the wind / picks up a plastic chair and decides not to sit in it."

5.0 out of 5 stars dark, complex, mature, January 14, 2009

This review is from: The Endarkenment (Pitt Poetry Series) (Paperback)
I first was introduced to the poetry of Jeffrey McDaniel in the late 1990s and -- like every other poet I knew -- I became an instant fan. He released three books with SF's Manic D Press that showcased his quirk, his bravado and his singularly poetic voice: an instantly recognizable thing which is damn near impossible to duplicate.

In 2008, McDaniel published "The Endarkenment," his first book of poetry on an university press and a departure from the looser, spangled verse of his early collections. This book is grounded, adult even, but without losing the McDaniel's unique poetic qualities.

The poems gleam with equals parts awe and heartbreak. He talks with an earned candor about his childhood, his alcoholic past and the birth of his daughter, bending common words and phrases until they become clean, complex instruments for his vision. The book isn't without its humor -- "Boner Etiquette" being an obvious stand-out -- but it really shines when McDaniel takes a hard look into the darker parts of his life.

Highly recommended for fans of McDaniel who want to see the next part of this amazing poet's evolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air, January 18, 2012

and, boy, was I gasping!! Quirky and funny, but still able to be serious and introspective. Definitely different than a lot of stuff I've read, that is to say, not seemingly stuffy or pretentious. It's just the book of poetry I've been searching for. Couldn't recommend it any more.
