About the Author

Dr. David Ludwig is an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School as well as director of the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) Program at Children's Hospital Boston, one of the largest clinics for overweight children and their parents in the United States. His groundbreaking research has been the basis for some of the most successful diets of the past decade, including the South Beach Diet and SugarBusters.

Suzanne Rostler is a dietician at the OWL clinic. She received a master's of science in clinical nutrition from New York University.

This book is my new Bible for my diet and my patients. It's practical information is invaluable. The science relating to this difficult field is raised to a new level. And what is unusual about this book is the compassionate feeling which is conveyed throughout. It is clearly advice for people of all ages.

When my child was diagnosed as obese, we looked for help everywhere and anywhere. I finally came across this book and it has become the family bible. The book starts with basic nutrition, obesity-related health problems, and then talks about how our environment has changed over the past decades to promote obesity. It then talks about a low glycemic index diet and gives a 9 week battle plan for changing eating and activity habits. Even though I am not entirely sold on the low glycemic index theory, the end result is a fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and whole foods based diet that few could argue with. The book's advice on how to increase physical activity was realistic and doable. As well as the "formal" activities like walks and playing games, it talks about the importance of frequent, short bursts of activity we all do in life, like taking the stairs, fidgeting, even chewing gum!

The most valuable part of the book for me was how to instill a healthy attitude towards eating in a child. Right now, when my child is young, I can control (more or less!) what goes into his mouth. But when he gets older, the control will shift to him. How to guide him to making healthy decisions without turning him into a calorie-obsessed nervous wreck? The book addresses that by talking about modeling, supporting without dictating, and sharing of your own nutritional approach. These concepts are described in theory and then fleshed out with specific examples.

The tone of this book is very sympathetic, both to the overweight kids and to their parents. In contrast to some of the other reviewers, I did not feel this was repetitive or that I was being talked-down to. I felt like I was listening to someone who finally understood what my family was going through and had a solution. The only thing that I wish this book had discussed was food cues and how to minimize them, which for my family helped a lot.

This is a really terrific book! Dr. Ludwig has done brilliant research on the cause of obesity. This book is actually the second food fight he has ended. The first was between the low carbohydrate and the low fat diet proponents. His definitive research findings show that the low glycemic carbohydrate diet is superior to the low fat diet. This book ends the food fight between the loving parents who want the best for their child and the food producers who just want your children to eat as much as possible to fatten their profits.

If any of your children are overweight, you MUST read this book. Dr. Ludwig addresses the problem of motivating your child to lose weight in a loving, down to earth, practical way.

I bought this book on a recommendation from a website, and though the book is aimed at helping parents prevent obesity in their own children, it is an excellent guide to nutrition and proper eating habits for everyone.

The secret is to reduce the glycemic load that highly processed foods force on the body. This is critical to reducing and controlling weight. Would you believe that eating a potato has almost the same effect as sugar? It's converted almost immediately into sugar.

This is an informative, easy to read book, that doesn't get preachy or force you into a fad diet. One of the recommendations I've seen is to "eat around the perimeter of the store." In other words, the meat, dairy, and produce, the fresh stuff. Forget about the cookies, convenience foods, etc., that populate the center isles. You'll save a ton of money and be far healthier.

Another good tip is to not eat anything your Grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. If you can't pronounce the stuff on the label, don't eat it. Seems to work.

Great little book.

I have been reading this book and I have learned so many new things.
I have shared information with my 10 yr.old son and he also finds it interesting. We have thrown away all the high fructose products we found in our pantry and we are not going to buy them anymore! I wish so many people had access to this type of information, is amazing to see so many kids eating "junk food" that we think is supposed to be healthy.
I definitively recommend it!
