3.0 out of 5 stars Matchgame DVD, October 21, 2007

Best of Match Game DVD Collection

This is a fun party game, especially for people of the generation that watched this gameshow on TV back in the 70's. I was a little disappointed the music wasn't the funkiest version, but a tamer one. It also felt a little slow paced. Not sure why there are freeze frames of the panel members- you hear the audio but their image is frozen- a minor distraction.

There are 25 versions to play- once you've done them all you're not likely to play any of them again so this is perhaps good for one or two (drinking) games- still making it a good value.

We've had 4 game nights lately, with Match Game being the overall winner for favorite game (in fact- we had to play it at EACH game night.) Seeing Charles, Brett, and of course Betty in all their Match Game glory is something we can't get enough of. The music isn't the original music- but it's definitely caught the spirit of the show's music. We only wish there were more versions, and that the slow, slow, slow scoring process could be turned off so we can manually score (which we do - typically we have more than 6 players joining the fun.)

The first thing that hit me when I first played this game was that the original (and very catchy) 70's theme music isn't used here. Video is very limited and the game tends to favor voice overs of the guest panelist to their photos. Some of this was probably to ensure footage wasn't showing the original contestants.

Game players write down responses on their own dry erase boards to various "fill in the blank" questions ("Dumb Dora was so dumb, she used her hairbrush on her blank"). Most open the door to innuendo. Although I remember watching this on TV as a kid, I wouldn't call this a "family game."

You select one of several "games" from the DVDs menu, which suggests that the replay value is going to be low. Questions aren't mixed probably because the actors on the panel changed through the years.

Overall it's a good party game, but not something you could probably play with your spouse/partner on a regular basis.
