We got the idea for scoring from the original Spill and Spell years ago, and it's much easier than having to read the manual each time you play. Just square the number of dice and add up the totals: 3-letters = 9 points; 4-letters = 16 points; 5-letters = 25 points; up to my best of 11 letters = 121 points. If you can't use up all the dice, you square the ones remaining and subtract that from your total score. And ditch the timer! Buy multiple games so everyone works at his or her fastest pace, and no one gets bored waiting 6 or 7 minutes for Grandma to finish OR gets frustrated by never being able to do anything in the time allotted. These newer games now come with 22 dice, which is a nice improvement over the old 15 cube game--lots more possibilities for longer words.
My only complaint (as others have mentioned) is that the cup has no lid, so the cubes float loose in the box; I have a circle of plastic that I rubber-band over the top of the cup to keep them in place. SOMEDAY, I'll stitch fabric covers with elastic to fit the cups (HEY! maybe I'll sell them and earn enough to purchase a couple more games!).
I was disappointed that unlike my childhood version of the game, the cup does not have a lid. This makes it a lot less convenient for traveling. Also, the game I had as a child had numbers on the letters indicating point value.
Overall, I still enjoy playing it again, this time with the next generation.
