Clear your throat and drink that honey-lemon tea: It's time to play Encore, the game of dueling larynxes. The goal is to come up with a song that contains particular words--and then sing lines from the song that contains those words. Here's how it works: The first team turns up a card featuring five words; the two teams then take turns singing at least six words of any song that contains one of those five. The round continues until one team is stumped, which, if the word is "love," could take a while. But repetition is not allowed, and for every "said" and "moon," there's a "highway" or "piano"--whaddya do when you've exhausted the Billy Joel songbook? And it's great to draw a lyric that's in a song title, but if you don't know five others that come after, you'll be like the player who drew "nice"; he spent the entire run of the sand timer with his shoulders hunched like Sinatra because he couldn't connect "and let's make all the stops along the way" with the song's title, "Nice 'N' Easy." Oh, and don't play Encore with Renaissance Faire actors--when they draw the word "lady," they'll come up with an inexhaustible supply of 15th-century madrigals. Only after they've won will you discover that they were all bogus. --Tony Mason

I've had this game for years and can't wait until I can buy copies for friends. The rules are very simple -- a team rolls the die and chooses a card. The card will have a word, such as "blue." Someone on that team would have to sing part of a song that has the word blue in it (e.g., don't you step on my blue suede shoes).. Then the next team would have to sing part of another song with the word blue in it (I'll have a blue Christmas without you...), and so on, until a team can't think of another song with blue in it. Then a new word gets chosen. It's great for kids and adults, an excellent mixer to liven up a party.

The idea is fun. I played with 6 people.
When you land on different spots on the board they'll have special 1 on 1 challenges. We eventually just ignored those, because there were too many of them and it's more fun when everyone gets to play.
The board itself is kind of daftly designed, because it's difficult to see the game pieces or the direction you're supposed to go.
The gameplay has a very odd kink where it's easy to cheat (if anyone were so inclined). None of my friends are going to cheat, but it's a poorly designed game where it's so easy to.
When we finished the regular game, we just ignored the board and rules and just started reading off the cards and singing songs. That was more fun.
Also, it was surprisingly difficult. We could rarely get more than 3 or 4 songs for a word.
Then sometimes you get a category instead of a word, and it's so broad that you can simply go forever.
Poorly designed game, but you can make it fun with your own rules. The rules for the final round are fun to just use on repeat.

The good thing about this game is that it's all inclusive and people can participate to whatever degree they like. You can just sit and watch if you want, and still feel like you're part of the game.

Fun concept, but poor game design.

The premis for this game is intruiging and fun -- to be able to come up with a song that has lyrics that use words identified by the game.
The reason I gave the game 4 stars, however, is that I had an awful experience the first time I played the game. Here's the scoop...the group I played with included my father-in-law (a country music singer) and young brother-in-law (a rap fan). They repeatedly claimed and sang songs and tunes I had never heard of. I'm not saying that any cheating went on, but I was so far out of the loop about the songs they were choosing that there was no way to tell who was winning and who was losing. Well, OK, I was losing.
This can be a fun game if played with your musical peers. It can be a major disaster otherwise.
I hope this insight helps someone out there.

Encore is absolutely my favorite game of all time. It is wonderful to play with family, friends, at parties, etc... if you can sing, you can play! (Well, even if you can't sing, you have fun trying!) I recommend this game for anyone ages 9-99. It really encourages a healthy competitive spirit while at the same time providing hours of genuine fun.

This game is so much fun at a party. It gets everyone involved and it makes you think fast. As many people as there are can play. It's my favorite game and everyone who I've introduced it to loves it too.

We bought this game about eight years ago through Parker Brothers. I wish there was an additional set of cards. We've played it so many times we've completely run out of words, so we've begun to make up our own. The next day after playing this game you'll be humming or thinking about a tune and say "Oh! I could have used that song in the game!"

This game is really very fun. The first time i played it i ended up staying up all night i had so much fun. It doesn't matter if the people like different kinds of music either because you just have to think of a song for a specific word. I highly recomend it for anyone who likes music at all

My family LOVES this game. You never know where your inspiration will come from; in my house we've gone from Sinatra to Dead Kennedys to vacation bible school songs. You spend as much time laughing as singing! Forget musical talent! As long as you know the words and can closely approximate the tune, you're golden.
