More About the Author

Grandma Garrison was Nancy's mentor while she made her first quilt in 1972. Gram asked her to cut a 6-inch square template from paper and pin it on some fabric. Using regular scissors, quite dull, Nancy cut around the paper template. After cutting about two dozen squares, she noticed some of the squares were not the same size. Nancy called Gram and said, "My blocks don't seem to be the same size." Gram replied, "Are you cutting any of the paper template off when you cut around it?" Nancy replied, "No, only once in a while!" That was Nancy's first lesson in accuracy and it has stuck with her all these years. Today her hallmark is accuracy, and she stresses it with students and attributes the wide recognition of her work to its continued emphasis.

She has written several best-selling books, including Featherweight 221: The Perfect Portable, and Rotary Magic. Nancy also refined how to work with squares and rectangles in her other best-selling books Block Magic; Block Magic, Too!; and Stars by Magic. Recently she was granted a U.S. patent for her innovative technique used for making Eight-Point Stars from squares and rectangles.

Nancy has been a spokesperson and consultant for Omnigrid, a division of Prym Consumer USA, Inc., for over eighteen years.

Her hobbies include reading mysteries, traveling to see children and grandchildren, working in her flower gardens (they keep expanding), and making baby quilts for charity. In recent years she has donated over 600 quilts to brighten the lives of needy children and parents. Nancy lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Frank.

5.0 out of 5 stars Endless and Fast, November 28, 2000
This review is from: Endless Possibilities: Using No-Fail (tm) Methods (Paperback)
When I worked at a quilt shop, I kept coming across this book. I wasn't impressed by the cover or the fabrics used in making the sample blocks(probably because I like bright colors). But I was drawn to the book and purchased it one night before I left work. I am so glad I did. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is simple, precise and fast. I immediately made several quilts using this book. Nancy does a wonderful job of laying out exact directions. Each block has instructions for making one (as a sample). In the back, listed under the name of the block, are directions for an entire quilt. This truly is a No-Fail book. No extra junk, just down to business, get this cut out and lets get a quilt made. She has some neat ideas about combining the blocks for a unique quilt. My son-in-law loves the "Stars Adrift" I did for him in his alma mater colors. I love to recommend and give this book as a gift. I don't ever loan mine out, it is too valuable.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the intermediate quilter who wants to improve, March 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Endless Possibilities: Using No-Fail (tm) Methods (Paperback)
The author is a superb teacher. This book was written in 1995 and is a source of information for the competent intermediate level quilter who wants to take their skills up a level and for the beginner who would like to learn how to do it right the first time. There are many "DUH!" moments.

She covers the basics, from achieving the elusive perfect 1/4" seam, to methods of pressing, and techniques for set in seams and mitering. I found her comparison of tools giving reasons for her choices valuable.

There are twenty individual block patterns in two sizes, six and twelve inches. The sewing directions include pressing guidelines and two pictures of the block, one uncolored and one showing her chosen color contrasts. Additionally there are color photographs of each block and several of completed quilts.

At the back of the book are fabric requirements to make an 83" x 98" quilt from each block. Information is listed by total yardage for each color value, number and size of strips and total pieces of each shape. This is an absolute boon for those wanting to use scraps from their stash.

This is a book every dedicated quilter should add to their library while there are still copies to be found.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good reference, May 16, 2009

This review is from: Endless Possibilities: Using No-Fail (tm) Methods (Paperback)
This book would be an excellent choice for a beginner but is also a wonderful source of information for just about any level of quilter. The directions are very detailed with explicit diagrams and color photos of each finished block. I haven't done much quilting myself and plan on using this book as a primary source of direction and assistance.
