Book Description

May 2, 2006
In this fictionalized account of a true crime, drifter Buck Powell poses as a policeman to take Nathan Wheeler from a small town's high school. When Amy Sterling learns that her boyfriend has been kidnapped, she immediately suspects Zeb Mulroney, Buck's cousin. Although the police discount her suspicion, her mother Lucinda asks the tenant of their garage apartment, Devon Gray, a retired homicide detective from Texas, to help them search for Buck. Romantically involved with Lucinda, Devon agrees to humor Amy to keep her from idle worry. The three of them set off in his old truck on an all-night manhunt into the mountains. During the night, Devon is challenged by Amy's youth and his love for Lucinda to tackle the problem more gently than he normally would. Achieving partial success, he takes the women home and sets off alone to finish the job. Amy, haunted by the thought of Nathan's suffering, arranges a meeting with Zeb. She takes Devon's gun, intending to use it to discover the truth about Nathan's fate, but a third party intervenes, proving we are all connected and life is an endless river that never stops pulling us into the future.

Elizabeth Fackler is the author of novels, short stories, and poetry. Sunstone Press has recently reissued her classic novel on the Lincoln County War: Billy the Kid: The Legend of El Chivato. Western Writers of America called it "a magnificent achievement in historical fiction." She lives with her husband, Michael, and their two dogs, Pecos and Mitchum, in Capitan, New Mexico.

From Booklist

Fackler presents a suspenseful tale based on a true crime. Set in a small southwestern town, the story follows teenage Amy Sterling; her librarian mom, Lucinda; and their new tenant, Devon Gray, a former cop from El Paso, who has taken up residence in the garage--and in Lucinda's bed. Though they know little about Devon, Amy and Lucinda turn to him when Amy's boyfriend, Nathan, is abducted from high school by a thug named Buck Powell. Amy suspects Buck's cousin, Zeb--whom she dumped after witnessing his violent temper--of being behind the kidnapping; but his powerful family stands in the way of investigating him. As the odd trio of Devon, Lucinda, and Amy search for the missing Nathan, Devon suspects the worst but keeps quiet. Lucinda, despite her attraction to Devon, is uneasy when she discovers the reason he left El Paso. Fackler does a masterful job of character development, seamlessly switching points of view between several of the players. A page-turner with appeal for both mystery and true-crime fans. Review

"This is an intriguing regional thriller that moves on several paths, including a police procedural, a major private investigation, and a chilling story of abuse by the kidnappers. The story grips the reader, who wonders what Zeb will do next, but it is the characters, including a young drifter, that turns ENDLESS RIVER into a fine Texas thriller."

5.0 out of 5 stars intriguing regional thriller, April 6, 2005
In Berredo, Texas, four hours from El Paso, Buck Powell pretends to be a police officer, shams the school administration, and abducts student Nathan Wheeler. The victim's seventeen years old girlfriend Amy Sterling becomes concerned about him because he never made it to the police station. Amy thinks nasty peer Zeb Mulroney, who she dated until she saw his abusive side, kidnapped Nate, but no one believes her as the evidence including two eye witnesses from the school points to his cousin Buck.

Amy's mother Lucinda persuades former El Paso cop, her tenant and lover Devon Gray to investigate. Reluctantly he does to pacify the teen as much as he also likes her and her mother. Accompanied by the two females who have given him a reason to live, Devon searches the nearby mountain roads for the missing lad. However, unbeknownst to him or the local police Zeb is the mastermind behind the abduction as he plans to hurt Nate for going out with his girl.

This is an intriguing regional thriller that moves on several paths to include a minor police procedural, a major private investigation, and a chilling abuse of the victim by his kidnappers. The story line grips the audience who wonder what Zeb will do next, but it is the deep cast to include a young drifter that turns ENDLESS RIVER into a fine Texas thriller.
