An Old Favorite,

I've just ordered this book for my daughter. I haven't read The Endless Steppe in more than 30 years but I still remember the impact it had on me. Clearly, it marked a turning point in my understanding that; there were girls my age in other parts of the world living a life very different from my own.To this day I carry images in my mind created by Esther Hautzig of survival, unraveling sweaters to knit new ones and writing between the lines of old newspapers. Yet the main character was so much a girl like me. |
