Book Description

July 24, 2012 Paranormalcy

Kiersten White’s New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy comes to a breathless conclusion with a signature mix of wit, romance, paranormal creatures, and a truly original heroine.

In Endlessly, pink-loving, butt-kicking Evie has way too much on her to-do list. Paranormals are begging her to open a faerie gate so they can leave the human world, something Evie’s not sure she has the power to do. The Dark Queen is torturing humans and must be destroyed.

On top of all that, Evie’s prom is coming up. She’s not sure what to wear, and, oh, yeah, her shape-shifting boyfriend, Lend, has been cursed so that he falls into an enchanted sleep whenever he and Evie are in the same room…and even Evie’s ex-boyfriend, the faerie Reth, can’t reverse the dark magic.

An epic battle is looming, and the choices Evie makes will determine the fate of whole paranormal world—and her own life.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 8-11-Paranormals and Light Court Faeries want to return to their world. Evie is an Empty One and can make a gate that will let them through. When they try to force her to do so, she rebels, mainly because they tell her she must do it. She formerly worked for the International Paranormal Containment Agency (IPCA), and they apparently forced her to do things she did not want to do. Confused? For readers who are new to the story, it feels as though there is a secret club of vocabulary and references to previous events. The story is episodic, with Evie repeatedly making the same mistakes, and with her near-misses neatly resolved. However, the first two books have been popular and there will be demand from those readers for this book. It is a clean paranormal romance-Evie even says (somewhat annoyingly) "BLEEP" instead of any swear words, and the sex factor is very low, with only a bit of touching and a few stolen kisses. Review

“Fans who love Evie’s signature style of butt-kicking, wise-cracking, headlong rushing into trouble, neatly mixed with her addiction to all things romantic and girly, will embrace every nerve-wracking moment. A sparkly gift tied-up with a pretty pink bow.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (Starred Review) )

“There’s not a character in YA fiction that I enjoy reading more than Evie’s. Endessly had me in its clutches from the first hilarious page to the last breathtaking sentence. A fun, heartfelt, and dynamic ending to a marvelous series.” (Cynthia Hand, New York Times bestselling author of Unearthly )

“The wind-swept, sky-torn ending earns the term epic as Evie seizes the chance to right past wrongs.” (Booklist )

4.0 out of 5 stars It was exactly the ending I wanted. Sort of. October 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Holy bleep. It's over. It's really bleeping over.

I need to go grab my pinkest, sparkliest shirt and cry.

But you know what?

This trilogy not only STAYED a trilogy (thank God), but it also ended just the way I wanted it to, in the way that I wanted it to.

Well, sort of.

Opening these pages was really hard to do. It's the beginning of the end, you know? I really enjoyed the first two books of the series for what they were: fun, fluffy, sugar hyped rides that made me giggle while gripping the pages in a MUST KEEP READING frenzy. I expected everything and anything from Endlessly. In a way, I got both.

It was, as ever, a crazy, quirky ride. Evie remained the same crazy chick she always was, but in a way that also bothered me a little. I honestly can't see too much difference between Evie at the start and Evie at the finish, and after all she's gone through I expected at least a little bit of something more. Because of the way Evie is written, it's often hard to find depth in her character. ...of course, if you're reading these books for depth, you're kind of in the wrong place.

Lend didn't take as much precedence in this book as I wanted him too, simply because he and Evie are so cute together. Of course, Evie was FREAKIN' BUSY saving the world and everything, but Lend could have helped out a little more than he did. The one time he DID go with Evie, he spent most of his time naked and passed out and Evie didn't even appreciate it. (No, it was totally PG. It's a loooong story, folks.)

I was actually quite surprised to see as much of Jack and Reth as we did. After all, who would partner up with two people who tried to kill her and/or otherwise harm her? Oh, right, Evie. Despite her and Lend's apparent lack of depth, a surprising amount of it was given to Jack and Reth, which I absolutely loved. We really got to know these characters and understand them, and they became so much more than just accomplices. Reth, especially. I didn't even like him in the first couple of books, but after this one I just felt ... all of the things for him.

You guys all know how I pick at logical consistencies. For Kiersten White, I'll put a lid on it. Several key plot points and twists did not make sense and/or happened far too fast, but you know what? Again, if water tight plot is what you're looking for, you're in the wrong place.

I don't want to talk too much about the plot, but let me just say this: did you want to know more about the faeries? You'll get it. You'll get A LOT of it. This one is very faerie-centric. You'll even get to spend a LOT of time in the Faerie Realms. Did you want to see more supernatural creatures? You'll get them. There's even a dragon and a unicorn. Do you want to know the entire purpose behind creating the Empty Ones? You'll get that. (Hint: It's not what you think by a loooong shot.) Several characters make unexpected returns as well. And that's all I'm saying.

I enjoyed Paranormalcy as much as I did because it was quite possibly the quirkiest book I ever read. I laughed out loud out of pure, "Are you serious?" at times, just because of Evie's personality. It was pure, undiluted mind candy. PINK, SPARKLY mind candy. And it was amazing. Supernaturally was more of the same, even if I felt it didn't measure up to Paranormalcy. Endlessly at least matched Supernaturally. There were too few opportunities for me to laugh in this one-again, understandable because Evie is freaking out trying to save the world, but still. That said, I found Endlessly to be a fitting finale for the series. The entire series was tied neatly with a bow-a pink, sparkly one. Have fun with your normal life, Evie!

However unnormal it will be.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ENDING! July 24, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Oh, bleep, guys. She did it again!

Kiersten White totally delivered on her final installment in the Paranormalcy trilogy. Faeries, vampires, and...Empty Ones? OH MY!

If you haven't gotten around to this series, I suggest you do it soon so you can be prepared for the awesomeness that is Evie and Tasey (her pink glitzy taser sidekick).

Elements that I absolutely adored:

EVIE. Well, yeah, she's the MC and she completely rocks. Not only is she hilariously sarcastic, but she is way different than any other supernatural/paranormal creature I've come across in my reading ventures.
Her relationship -- Let's just say that they can pretty much deal and overcome anything by each other's side and for each other. I love it...they are so devoted no matter what happens.
Reth. Oh, my dear stalkery, creepy, overbearing, beautiful faery dude. He is a pill and always likes to remind everyone just how loathsome and fragile poor little humans are. But that's okay because he totally adores Evie and wants to protect her. However, his plans tend to leave her feelings and opinions unaccounted for.
IPCA. An international agency that bags and tags supernatural and paranormal nasties to protect humanity. They're the good guys...OR ARE THEY?!
The twists and turns in this book had me second guessing everything. I wasn't sure who was up to no good and who was actually genuine, but that kept me on my toes & kept the story fast-paced and interesting.
THE ENDING. Oh, wow. Just...Yes. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic trilogy. All loose ends were tied-up and I was left sitting there with a big goofy grin on my face.
P.S. I totally hope White writes a little short story about Evie & Lend: The later years.

This book has just enough serious-the-world-might-end-what-is-happening elements and hilarity for a perfect balance of entertainment! Also, the cover is amazing (along with the other two books' covers!).

HarperTeen does this thing where they let people read the first seventy-or-so pages of an upcoming new release online -- in order to whet our appetites and boost sales. When I first get notice in my email about these deals, I LOVE HarperTeen.

But when I hit the end of the sample... Boo HarperTeen! It's almost torture to get so far into a story only to have to wait for release day! Because I'm such a Kiersten White fan girl, I've begun all of her books this way. So last week some time I was exactly 80 pages into Endlessly, the third and final book in the Paranormalcy trilogy, and craving more. Needless to say, when my book arrived the afternoon of July24th (Happy Pioneer Day to me!), I gobbled it up.

The first book redefined my expectations for the paranormal genre. The middle book served its purpose as a bridge, but left me wanting so much more of Lend, Reth, and Evie. But this last book...

It fulfilled all the promises of the story. It's superb! It's exciting and epic and well-crafted. I never could have imagined it would end the way it did. Somehow all the loose ends I'd been worrying about throughout the series got tied off in a gorgeous, complicated bow.

It's one of those endings that delivers exactly what you didn't know you were hoping for all along.

As in the first and second books, Evie's voice is endearing and funny. The theme of being true to yourself and not allowing yourself to be absorbed in someone else was as striking as ever as Reth - the gorgeous golden trickster - continues to guide Evie as best he can toward the choice he believes is best. In a moment of exasperation, he says, "You take a tremendous amount of leading to make the correct choices."

Reth's story arc was surprising to me, as we are given to understand the fey are eternal and changeless. Shallow, scary Jack's transformation, too, was unexpected and satisfying.

Reading this last book was for me like spending time with old friends. The humor, sarcasm, and wit in each character's unique voice made this book a pleasure, and the spot-on pacing made it unputdownable.

I highly recommend this trilogy to anyone, but especially teen readers who love all things paranormal. They'll find a feast of magic in Paranormalcy, Supernaturally, and now Endlessly.

Happy Reading! (also posted on Afterglow Book Reviews)
