ENDOCRINE PATHOLOGY
LESTER D. R. THOMPSON

Reviewed by Dr Tim Stephenson, Consultant Histopathologist, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, on behalf of The Royal College of Pathologists, January 2007

This is the fifth volume in the Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology series and by 'endocrine pathology', the authors mean a scope of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pituitary and paraganglion system pathology with appendices on anatomy, embryology and histology and intraoperative consultation and grossing techniques.

I found the style of this volume to be consistent and well organised. Information is clearly presented and, for a medium-sized volume, there is a commendable level of detail. The level of detail is suitable for genuine diagnostic practice - this is a working pathologist's book rather than a postgraduate student's book.

I commend the generous level of illustrations which is in full colour, sharp, well colour-balanced, and genuinely illustrative of the features being described. I found myself appreciating the fact sheets and can imagine a diagnostic histopathologist quickly glancing through them to refresh their mind on features, or to look whether a condition was seriously within the differential diagnostic being considered, or if it could be ruled out without further reading.

I can warmly recommend purchase of this book for departments practicing endocrine pathology at secondary and tertiary healthcare levels.

More About the Author

Born in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and raised in the Republic of South Africa, I immigrated to the United States in 1978. I completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (with an emphasis in Finance) at Columbia Union College in 1984. I thoroughly enjoyed editing the school newspaper and year book and operated "Columbia Investors". I completed medical school at Loma Linda University in 1988 while teaching anatomy for the dental and physical therapy students and serving as the social director for the class. After an Orthopedic Surgery internship in 1989, I completed a Pathology Residency at University of California--Los Angeles in 1993. At UCLA, under the direct influence of Drs. Yao Shi Fu and Dorothy Rosenthal, I developed a strong interest in head & neck pathology and in cytology. After doing advanced training in Cytopathology, my wife and I spent 6 months traveling around the world, visiting 23 countries before joining the United States Navy (CAPT, MC, USNR). With triple Board Certification in Pathology, I worked for a decade at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC, developing a specific interest and expertise in pathology of the Head and Neck and Endocrine organs. During this time, I served as Chief of the Division of Otorhinolaryngic-Head & Neck Pathology, Chief, Division of Immunopathology, and Assistant Chairman, Department of Scientific Laboratories. I was honored to receive the John Hill Brinton Award in 2001. I have continued to enjoy research (over 140 research papers). I currently serve as the co-editor of Head and Neck Pathology; serve on the editorial boards of a number of peer reviewed scientific journals; teach at national and international conferences; serve as an active member of a number of national and international societies; and collaborated on the World Health Organization's books for Head and Neck and Endocrine Organs. I really enjoy writing, and besides publishing chapters in many major pathology, endocrine and head and neck surgery textbooks, I have also published a number of books. Besides work, I thoroughly enjoy traveling, weight lifting, stained glass, cake decorating, SCUBA and any time with my wife and cats.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useful for residents, August 23, 2007

This review is from: Endocrine Pathology: A Volume in Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology Series (Hardcover)
To anyone who had read my other reviews, you probably know that I have been consistently disappointed with this series. They are relatively inexpensive and have nice tables.....probably a nice reference/atlas for residents who can afford them (maybe that really is the target audience). But I am a practicing pathologist, and this is another in the series that I just do not find useful. Whenever I need help on a difficult case, the more unusual entities or variants just aren't there. For my purposes, the only ones in the series I have really for worthwhile have been the Hematopathology & maybe the Head & Neck book....I will keep buying these to have a complete library, but.....
