Book Description

July 25, 2000
Fiction. A man slowly loses everything to his pushy, guitar-playing roommate. Bobby Fischer hears Lenin coming out of the mouth of Buddy Ebsen. But to focus on individual moments like these in Theodore Pelton's debut collection of stories is to deny the dreamlike quality with which images shift on and off our mental screens. "The effect generated by these pieces is nearly visceral--powerful and not easily forgotten . one of the most potent experiences I've had reading literature"--Cris Mazza. "This masterful kaleidoscopic hall of mirrors is a vivid tableau from our multiple life's other side. No joke, folks. These are the echoes about two minutes after the initial blast. And you thought it was beer? Lucky you've got Ted Pelton minding the store"--Robert Creeley.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Darker and more politically and aesthetically challenging than much of what passes for mainstream domestic fiction in the current marketplace. -- Buffalo News, May 6, 2001

Wry commentary and shrewd wisdom. Pelton's voice asserts itself with power and grace... the stories take forms that take off. -- Rain Taxi, Winter 2000/01

From the Inside Flap

These short fictions, first published in a handful of obscure literary magazines between 1986-1995, show Theodore Pelton as one of our most innovative and perceptive new writers. "The effect generated by these pieces is nearly visceral," says novelist Cris Mazza, "powerful and not easily forgotten . . . one of the most potent experiences I've had reading literature." Pelton received an NEA Fiction Fellowship in 1994.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chastened by Chapeau, December 15, 2000
By
GCA (Brooklyn) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Endorsed by Jack Chapeau (Paperback)
About a month ago, a friend handed me a copy of Endorsed by Jack Chapeau. She leaned close and whispered, "Put this in your pocket." Well, I did. A week passed. Now, she didn't say anything about reading the thing, but I ride the bus, see, the B6 out of Canarsie, Brooklyn, and I get off at Flatbush Ave., about a twenty-five minute ride, and a man needs somewhere to put his eyes. I pulled out Pelton's book and damn near missed my stop! I'm not kidding. I was laughing like a lunatic, but when it dawned on me that I was laughing at myself, at my parents, and at my bus brethren, well, I was ... chastened. Repressed memories flooded in! Foaming at the mouth, I wandered through the streets, fondling stray dogs and humming Start Me Up by The Stones. Talk about an ax to smash the frozen sea within me! My insides are a jacuzzi now, bubbling and hot. Who is this Theodore Pelton? Where does he come from? I don't know, but I never ride public transportation without him. Recently I passed a few copies of this book to some friends, and the exact same thing happened to them! Yeah, Pelton's in my pocket, and I see things differently now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterful journey from truth to whimsy and beyond!, January 10, 2003
By
Florine M. Melnyk (Buffalo, New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Endorsed by Jack Chapeau (Paperback)
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection of short stories. Pelton's stories are captivating and thought provoking, as well as entertaining! He challenges the reader to travel beyond the confines of conventional thought and explore the possibilities that lie beyond. His stories run the gamut from the stark realities of society's flaws in, "Friendly Fire", to the pure fun and whimsy of life, in "The Twist". His style of fiction is a beautiful oasis in the desert of "mainstream" publications.
