An engaging listen,

"heavier than the last/first album". Such an overused phrase to describe most metal albums, yet it never becomes trite when it is the truth. That is exactly what this album is. Heavier than the last. It's still a compliment to those that deserve it and Cathedral deserves it. They've been running in this game for 10 yrs and now they are doing what they do best. Grind. They crushed with "Forest of Equilibrium" and "The Ethereal Mirror". They expanded with "The Carnival Bizzare" and "Supernatural Birth Medicine". Now they are crushing harder than ever before. Many people compare "doom" metal w/Black Sabbath, but these guys go beyond Sabbath. They are redefining expanding and creating beyond the blueprint that Sabbath laid down back in the day. They do it naturally, with finesse and with a keen sense of pacing.

not exactly what i was hoping for but good nonetheless. i was expecting really slow doom metal, but as i was told there were some good bits of stoner rock in here. this thing is equal parts doom, sludge and stoner and reminds me of a couple bands, namely black sabbath(of course) and the melvins. lee dorian's voice even reminds me of king buzzo when he's yelling. pretty thick when it's distorted(where it reminds me most of the melvins), the doom parts kill, and then there's a nice mix of acoustic and quiet parts. good album, nice mix but i'm gonna have to go buy forest of equilibrium and their earlier works. not slow enough ..

Good but really not the best,

I'll be honest, I bought this album with high anticipation but I listened through and couldn't help thinking to myself that they could have done better. "Melancholy Empire" is a pretty catchy song and so is "Alchemist of Sorrows" For anyone getting into Cathedral, I suggest getting "Carnival Bizzare" It focuses more on the stoom element other than traditional doom Cathedral fans are used to from previous albums. Check it out. You might like it more than me.

Doom metal extrordinaire - Horror has arrived.,

Despite all the moaning you may have read about this album such as "it's slow", or "it's boring"...well, those comments come from those who obviously aren't doom metal fans. This album is spectacular. In fact it could very well be my favorite album of 2001. Endtyme is an apocalyptic portrait that rumbles in your guts. "Cathedral Flames" opens with the power of a thousand suns blackening simultaneously, pure mayhem. "Melancholy Emperor" follows nicely with a dark, heavy power that will shake you and your withered frame. I could go on. This album almost creates a new genre of metal, horror metal. Some of the passages are downright freaky, often setting you on edge and twisting at your nervous system, namely the end of "Whores to Oblivion" and "Templars Arise". This album could be the soundtrack for every Halloween until the end of time. ...Anyone out there who wants to be shaken and rumbled to the core, check out Endtyme. Incredible. Doom...true doom has returned.

Return to Kyuss,
By A Customer

I've loved Cathedral since Soul Sacrifice. Though this album is sort of like one big Voyage of the Homeless Sapien, it's a welcome return to the headier side of heavy rock. It's been a while since something this complete and voyage-like has been released. It's as though Cathedral spent a few months listening to Kyuss and Sabbath and got back to their roots. Good stuff.

Dense,Heavy,Rough Great Album,

Endtime is the best Cathedral album, is their most extreme and brutal work , the artcover and concept is dark, the music is so fascinating because of the slow rithm , rough riffs , poetic lyrics , original sound effects, check out the noises in "whores to oblivion" you can imagine giant stones being carried on the ground , intro "cathedral flames" is delicious, "melancholy emperor" have incredible vocals with Lee Dorrian voice with distortion as emerging from beyond , "alchemist of sorrows" includes constant changes of rithm very black sabbath , Cathedral should record another album such as this one , I would love to

A second Equilibrium,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Endtyme (Audio CD)
This Cathedral release, as others have stated is a return to there traditional format of heavy, crushing riffs and drums, performed at a painfully slow tempo.
More for fans of tradional doom, and their 'Forest of equilibrium' release, rather than those who got into the band through lets say The etherreal mirror or carnival bizzare. Nothing new, but something to pass the time while your baked.

cathedral are on of the most talented underground metal bands. endtyme is back to old cathedral doom style metal. lee dorrian is an excellent lyricist. good musicianship make this album an excellent buy. there seem to be a few filler tracks on the end which bring it down.

Allright, dammit, I don't usually write reviews of albums but some of the [people] who've been bashing "Endtyme" really got under my skin. Too slow? Too SLOW??!! Are we talking about the same band here? The band that was defined by sludgy doom-metal archetypes the "Ethereal Mirror" and "Forest of Equilibrium"?Whoever thinks this record is too slow must have come on board somewhere around "Carnival Bizarre." Granted, I think Cathedral do the upbeat weird-psychedelic metal-swing thing well, but it also gets a little monotonous (I'm looking at YOU, "Supernatural Birth Machine"). I mean, how many times can a band re-write "Hand of Doom's" midsection anyway? "Endtyme" is majestic. It has elements of the groove thang ("Whores to Oblivion," "Melacholy Emperor," the bad... outro to "Ultra Earth"), but it also reinvents doom, my friends. The guitars are tuned low as hell (move over nu metal) and the production lets 'em crackle like the woofers are coming apart. Perfect. This stuff is genuinely frightening, without being overly melodramatic like some of the more goth doom bands out there. "Alchemist of Sorrow," "Requiem for the Sun,"..."Templars Arise!" My Lord, "Templars Arise!" Sure, its only like two or three notes, but those notes will pin you to the floor and slow your breathing. Simplistic? Boring? Overlong? Anyone who says that needs to go listen to a little ditty from '69 called "Black Sabbath." Need I say more? ... Doom on! |
