Excellent pictorial guide to the evolving arts of the Navajo, November 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Enduring Traditions: Art of the Navajo (Hardcover)
This is the book for both the layman and expert collector of Native American (Navajo) arts. The authors have divided the book into sections ranging from rug weaving, sand painting, pottery to jewellery and ornaments and many more. The pictures can only be classified as exquisite - very well taken and the pieces are typically of museum quality. Indeed most of the works are either collectibles or award-winners in private collection or museums. This volume is bound to be a feast for the eyes of the art collector/amateur alike. The authors also went to great lengths to interview various well-known artists regarding their works and lives. I picked this book up after I purchased a sandpainting and wanted to read up more about this art form. The artist whose work I bought, Joe Benally, had his works described in this book. And I was able to not only view some of his other works, but also learn about the origin and evolution of sandpainting as it is today. A great buy at the discount price at Amazon.
