About the Author
Merle Curti Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University. An editor of Notable American Women, 1607-1950 (1971), he also co-authored SALEM POSSESSED: THE SOCIAL ORIGINS OF WITCHCRAFT (1974), for which, with Stephen Nissenbaum, he received the John H. Dunning Prize of the American Historical Association. His other works include Urban MASSES AND MORAL ORDER IN AMERICA, 1820-1920 (1978), BY THE BOMB'S EARLY LIGHT: AMERICAN THOUGHT AND CULTURE AT THE DAWN OF THE ATOMIC AGE (1985), WHEN TIME SHALL BE NO MORE: PROPHECY BELIEF IN MODERN AMERICAN CULTURE (1992), and PROMISES TO KEEP: THE UNITED STATES SINCE WORLD WAR II, 2e. Clifford E. Clark, Jr. (PhD, Harvard University) is M. A. and A.D. Hulings Professor of American Studies and professor of history at Carleton College, where he has served as both Chair of the History Department and Director of the American Studies program. Dr. Clark is the author of Henry Ward Beecher: Spokesman for a Middle-Class America (1978), The American Family Home, 1800-1960 (1986), The Intellectual and Cultural History of Anglo-America since 1789 in the General History of the Americas, and, with Carol Zellie, Northfield: The History and Architecture of a Community (1997). He has edited and contributed to Minnesota in a Century of Change: The State and Its People since 1900 (1989). A past member of the Council of the American Studies Association, Dr. Clark is active in material culture studies and historic preservation, and he serves on the Northfield, Minnesota, Historical Preservation Commission.
Joseph F. Kett (PhD, Harvard University) is Commonwealth Professor of History at the University of Virginia. His works include THE FORMATION OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL PROFESSION: THE ROLE OF INSTITUTIONS, 1780-1860 (1968), RITES OF PASSAGE: ADOLESCENCE IN AMERICA, 1790-PRESENT (1977), THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE UNDER DIFFICULTIES: FROM SELF-IMPROVEMENT TO ADULT EDUCATION IN AMERICA, 1750-1990 (1994), and THE NEW DICTIONARY OF CULTURAL LITERACY (2002), of which he is a co-author. Neal Salisbury (PhD, University of California, Los Angeles) is a professor of History at Smith College. He is the author of MANITOU AND PROVIDENCE: INDIANS, EUROPEANS, AND THE MAKING OF NEW ENGLAND, 1500-1643 (1982), editor of THE SOVEREIGNTY AND GOODNESS OF GOD, by Mary Rowlandson (1997), co-editor, with Philip J. Deloria, of THE COMPANION TO AMERICAN INDIAN History (2002), and co-author of THE PEOPLE: A HISTORY OF NATIVE AMERICA (published by Houghton Mifflin). In addition, Dr. Salisbury has contributed numerous articles to journals and edited collections. I am using this book as a reference in my high school history class, and it is clearly a well-researched, well-written, and easy to use resource. It is obvious that many people think it is too wordy and difficult to understand, but it is a college text and should be treated like one. I would definitely recommend it to anyone preparing for a college American history class.

Lets face it a lot of history texts are prozaic and they do not have to be. Boyer and the other contributers deliver a text that is well written in the sense that it is somewhat enjoyable. The most important aspect of a text book is the information and The Enduring Vision does not fall short here either. I have used this book for background information in American history as a serious history student. It is a great source for quickly refreshing your mind on seldom visited topics. This would also make an excellent high school history text, but was really written for introductry college courses in American history from the colonial era to the present.

I used The Enduring Vision as a text for my AP US History class in high school. The organization, development, and discussion in the book increased my understanding of each era of our history. When used as one of two or three texts for the AP class (which I do recommend), The Enduring Vision provided me with insight into the major aspects of our history. The Student Manual to accompany The Enduring Vision was also a helpful tool in preparing for the AP Exam.
