Book Description

When you have no alternative, then you call in L.O.S.T. Because with the Last Option Special Team, it’s do or die. . . .

It’s Jax Cassidy’s first mission for L.O.S.T.—one that will give the former cop who went rogue a chance to prove herself. Her assignment: gain the trust of assassin Marcus Cross . . . eliminate him . . . then take down Marcus’s mentor, Joseph Lazarus, a man with a bold eye on the White House. But the woman who’s known by her team for being a femme fatale succumbs to passion, only to discover Cross’s deadly secret. He’s a vampire, and Joseph Lazarus is his creator.

Left for dead by his platoon in the violent hills of Afghanistan, Special Ops sniper Marcus Cross was given a second chance at life. His newly heightened skills make him the perfect killing machine, and as Lazarus’s right-hand man, he’s quickly rising to the top of his dark empire, purging enemies with speed and precision. Only when dangerous beauty Jax Cassidy is sent to bring him in does he begin to question Lazarus’s motives and his own actions. But when Jax’s life is threatened by the one thing that can destroy them both, Marcus must make a bitter choice—her death or his.

Editorial Reviews

“John Lukacs has justifiably brought attention to one of the Pacific War's most overlooked stories in his riveting book about the escape from Davao.  Lukacs so breathes life into the tale that readers feel the drama and suspense as if they were present.”

—John Wukovits, author of Admiral “Bull” Halsey: The Life and Wars of the Navy's Most Controversial Commander

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Twist with a hint of Fang May 26, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have to say that after reading the last few disappointing Elite Ops books from Lora Leigh I was needing a little bit of a fix. Karin Harlow has delivered and reminded me of why I loved the GhostWalker and Elite Ops/Seal books to begin with.

Jax Cassidy is a ghost, one who was raped, tortured and betrayed by her fellow cops. Luckily for her L.O.S.T took an interest in her and not only made her a ghost, but raised her from her ashes of self pity and honed a fighting machine. She now works seamlessly (as long as they don't touch her) with her fellow team members and is loving her new life and purpose. Only problem is that her latest target Marcus Cross is more then he appears... and she constantly gets hot just looking at him. Cross is an assassin and part of a vigil anti group called The Solution. It's headed up by a horridly power hungry man (or is he?) called Lazarus. Jax and her team's mission is to take out the head of the snake and crush The Solution before it causes any more trouble for the government.

Fate it seems is not on her side, Marcus touches a part of her that she's never felt before, any he is dangerous and more than her match. Marcus is equally intrigue and their game of cat and mouse begin. I'm not going to go into any more details, but I have to say the plot line is tight. There is so much going on, but there aren't any loose ends. I also really enjoyed the paranormal element to this book. It differentiated Harlow as an author as well as opened up numerous story lines for future books. I also liked the added evil of Lazarus being what he is, no normal mortal could cause that much terror or damage. Jax was a fantastic heroine and the fight scenes were amazing. Unlike many authors who blur over the details and suddenly 'it was all over' Harlow teased out details and I felt like I was watching the violence and blood first hand. This is definitely a must read if you are craving a little more than Maverick and Black Jack.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great June 7, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book was pretty good but not great. The first half moved pretty slow. It was 100 pages or so before the heroine and hero met. There was a lot of set up. The second half of the book moved pretty fast. Lots of fighting, love making and vampire plotting, etc. You didn't learn a whole lot about the vampire world itself just the one evil vampire. So if there are going to be more books there is plenty left to explain.

The hero and heroine spent a lot of the time at odds with each other. I generally prefer books where the two are together against whatever bad guy etc. The attraction was pretty good even though they were distrustful adversaries most of the time. The love between them was fairly fast but really more believable from him since he had never had love before and actively wanted it. Although it might have been stronger if we had more time in the hero's POV.

I never really saw much of a reason for her love for him except for her realization that he was not really an evil killer. The heroine was written very competent and hard edged. She had a lot of baggage to overcome. I can see where Marcus would help anyone over their fear of physical touch. He was a hot and magnetic man. But there wasn't quite enough to convince me that she would have trusted him so easily given how her distrust issues were played up so heavily in the front end of the book.

Minor SPOILERS below:

The very end was a bit of a let down. I was expecting more from the L.O.S.T. guys. It sucked big time that they didn't run out to help her when Marcus was down. I don't see how that can be overcome in future books as it seems is the intention.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and primal! May 28, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Enemy Lover grabbed me from the first page and didn't let go until the last page. Part of it is due to the dark and gritty characters. Part due to the high concept and fast-moving plot. Jax Cassidy, a former cop betrayed by her squad members and ex-fiance, is saved from a life in jail by the head of L.O.S.T. (Last Option Special Team). It's Jax's last option, and the L.O.S.T. team is after an enemy that has infiltrated the highest echelon of the U.S. government. Marcus Cross is the key, and Jax's orders are to seduce him, then eliminate him. But she finds out Marcus is more than a match for her. In fact, he's more than human.

Marcus Cross was abandoned as a baby by his society mother. Years later, his platoon left him for dead in Afghanistan. Like Jax, he's given a second chance at life - as a vampire. His creator sends him on killing missions to further his cause, but Marcus finds a primal connection to Jax that's stronger than the ties to his creator. Stronger than anything he's felt before in his life.

As I read this book, I kept thinking WOW! WOW! WOW! Harlow takes vamps to new levels, controlling members of the government and the military. And Jax and Marc are raw, with every nerve exposed. They've been defeated, betrayed and broken, then super-glued back together, coming out stronger and harder, the pieces that don't fit their new identities left behind. Enemy Lover is heart-pumping, lump-in-the-throat exciting and kept me whipping through the pages way into the morning hours.
